Computer security phone scam now in SA

they called me at work a few weeks ago while I was on the bog. entertained me it did :) was an indian sounding woman. as others have said, it sounded like she was reading from a script.

I've had them call me a few times. I try to play along. When they say run something and I go "WOW!! SOMETHING POPPED UP!! OMW!! WHAT IS THIS?!" and they get quite excited. Its fun.

Cellular companies should send SMS's to all their subscribers warning them of scams. I would move to a provider that does this.

To basically anyone on this forum it sounds incredibly stupid to fall for this but remember that many people (as hard as it may be to believe) don't understand basic computer concepts and in fact don't want to since it is "nerdy" or simply don't care. Usually the older generations that fall for this. Don't call them stupid because they don't show interest into wanting to know more about computers other than to just get work done on them, etc. Those who aren't fooled by this should protect those are imo.

Anyway I'm with riverdusty on this one.....playing along is the best :D.

Just tell them you're running Gentoo and if you have to edit another source file, then recompile your system again you'll explode.

I agree it is easy to get taken in if you don't know better. This scam has probably emerged because people are more aware of the previously used scams.

I know of 2 people that have had calls like this. One was my Father in law who said he will contact his Computer support (me). They got upset with him and put the phone down. A customer of mine also got the call, almost fell for it, but got suspicious when they were redirecting her to a webpage.

I would love to get a call from them.

I would tell them of a critical error in my event log like:
"Event ID10T
Someone is trying to gain illegal access to your computer, using social networking methods. Please quote the following error: IMNot@nId10t"

I would then have fun getting the person to try and explain that error to me.....

Got my spam call on my land line today asking that I change stuff on my computer since my computer is at risk. I told him that I will not obey some unknown person. Then he said he can verify my details. He gave me an address which I used more than 10 years ago and which is still listed in the Telkom phone book. My phone number moved with me but I did not update the address.

Started up again! I been phoned twice! Yesterday and today. My number is unlisted, They are using a dialler and if it succededs (you answer, nobody there) a bit later a human phone you .......... I am phoning you re your PC ME: No thanks, BYE!

Yep got that call today too. I'm going to trace the number of origin and put it here and report it to the police.

You guys are welcome to put the number up in any public bathroom stalls if you catch my drift

So they still pulling the same scam after all this time? I think they recycle

Would love to get a call from these scammers.

I've been to several tech support sites, wanna play the clueless and dumb luser on them, and get them to tear their hair out :D

Got a call today. It went like this:

You have a virus on your computer.

Which one?

Your have two computers?

No several?

Well they will all be infected.

What operating system is infected?

Windows?

So the Linux computers are OK?

How did you get my home number from a computer on the internet?

Did not answer because she had dropped the call at Linux.

My father spent like over an hour on the phone with these ppl after I still told him they talking kuka. They try sell software for your PC afaik and/or steal information from you?

The people on the phone were pretty pissed at the end of the call because they wasted so much time and didn't get a sale.

Times like this I start to loose faith in humanity (More the people being scammed than the scammers themselves) ...

Reminds of these Facebook math questions going around. Names have been LEFT IN to ridicule the moronic.

Question: ‎6 - 6 * 6 + 1 = ?

Chandre Van der Speck: ‎31?
Wade Alex Hayward: Ja its 31.
Kim Mel Fuller: Isn it 1?

<KroBa> 6 - 37 = -31
<KroBa> are you blind to - signs?

And I have to share the planet with f*king morons such as these.
Reelix boet... where u been?

Got the call from Microsoft today, etc... lady with an Indian accent. When I asked where is she based she said Cape Town, so I asked what address and she gave some random street address :p

I had just woken up, so after some initial :wtf: thoughts going through my head, I played along for a bit but then told her I didn't need their help. Really did not feel like booting up my PC and being late for work :erm::whistle:

I guess if I played along it might have gone something like this: http://blog.malwarebytes.org/fraud-...mers-call-the-wrong-guy-get-mad-and-trash-pc/
