Concern as electricity usage dips [NMBM]

Dumbest. ****ing. Government. Ever.
I'm truly speechless.

THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is facing a budget dilemma, as the city recorded a sharp drop in electricity usage over the past two months, which equates to a R27-million loss in electricity sales. Officials are baffled by the 18 million kWh drop in electricity consumption in June and July, at a time when electricity usage is usually at its peak.
We've had such a mild winter it's to be expected.
EDIT: and of course they came around to virtually every household and gave us all free energy saver lightbulbs…

Do use more electricity...but don't...but do...but conserve...but do...but don't waste it....

Why is everyone jumping on Eskoms back about this? This is the municipality's problem or budgeting large amounts on electricity usage and not considering the reduction in usage because of price/weather and other campaigns.

True, but Eskom run the national campaigns begging users to reduce their consumption!

Reasoning like children with no concept of consequences of their actions.

1) Eskom stuffed up supply with their policy of transformation at all cost.
2) Eskom hiked up prices by ridiculous amounts so people couldn't afford their usual quota.
3) Eskom begs people constantly on tv & over the radio to use less as there isn't enough to go around (see step 1)

Now suddenly they don't understand why everyone's losing out on income? And their proposed solution is to increase prices which will just worsen the cycle as alternative energy sources will become affordable instead?

God this is elementary stuff .. really begs the question why they're getting paid such big salaries when a child could figure this out.

Are you saying that the Eskom management think and reason like children do? WTF If I should have said that I should have been called RACIST by the red brigade :D

Where do you live that you are able to get off the grid for R100k?

Please point me in that direction.

Typical answer: heard it from a friend :)

A few years back a friend of mine got quotes for enough solar panels and a wind generator (or two) that would provide enough electricity for him to not need a connection any more. It came to just under R100k at the time.

I think he already had a gas stove, gas heater and solar geyser, so the solar was for his lights, fridge and entertainment units.

Another thing that Eskom and their related gravy boat buddies seem to have missed is that while electricity was dirt cheap alternative energy just did not make any sense.

Going "off the grid" for R100k just does not make sense if your electricity bill is R500 per month as it would take 16 years to recoup your investment.

However, when your bill is R1500 per month suddenly you look at a 66 month investment, 5.5 years.

What makes it even funnier is that alternative energy options are becoming CHEAPER while Eskom is becoming more expensive. If they are not there yet they will soon pass the point where it becomes insane to NOT ditch them! :D

+1 Well spotted.

This can't be serious topic right? But it's not 1 April?

Ahhh ok.. yeah if he had taken some of his big hitter appliances off the grid already, then its feasible... but there are ongoing maintenance costs so the payback period is still closer to 7 or 8 years...

That is true. But we are getting to the point where it makes financial sense to unplug eishkom from your life :)

I know we have changed our habits.

Gas stove, gas heater. Put a cover over swimming pool so now it is on max 1 hr a week, LED lights and have gone from using R700 a month to R450

Next week I am installing a gas geyser as my parents have seen a reduction of 50% in their bill alone!

I will only calculate my total savings after I have made sure the savings have covered the cost of changing the things in the house, but so far it is very positive.

Next drop mweb & go to telkom, drop dstv and use Netflix :p (more money in my pocket)

And they'll keep raising prices until only the 'leccy pirates are left...

Make it cheaper, and people will use it. Make it expensive, and people will use it sparingly.

Same as with ADSL/3G. The cheaper, the more people will use, and you'll get your money back.

But I think that logic will keep escaping them...

Apologies I should have said brain-dead morons, children usually learn from their first or second mistakes.

Yeah but I am already a racist 'cos I'm white .. can't get any more racsit-er.
