Tomlin, who has a reputation for delivering controversial presentations, said: “Since I was here [in SA] a year ago, I have seen no improvement in telecommunications infrastructure. It is highly disappointing and it will weigh against the country if it tries to move into the offshore outsourcing arena.”

I often wonder why we are going down the SNO route ?

The goverment will do all it can to protect the market to ensure survival of the SNO and TELKOM.

This says to me, come rain or shine, Telkom and the SNO "MUST" survive. This suggests to me that the focus is all wrong. Why not let market forces to decide who survives ?

ESKOM had a wonderful vision To provide the worlds cheapest electricity for growth and prosperity or something snazzy like that. Todate we have the fourth cheapest electricity in the world. [Though the deregulation cloud change all that]

Our government should have made a similar decree and have TELKOM do the same; provide the wolrds most cheapest communication. Instead, they privatised TELKOM and now shareholders interests take precedent.

I suppose they did that to "stimulate foreign investment" ?
What has happened to the proceeds from the revenue after listing ?
Will someone enlighten me please ?

Yes everybody knows what should happen, everybody is too scared to do anything about it. He said they had plans for more than 10 years now, its horrable to think why it is still like this. But like the ussage statistics of this website shows, people are becomming aware - and thats not a force anyone can stand up to.

I hope this message reaches all that should see it, i.e. Telkom, government and the SA public. Its time to wake up SA, stop eating the *** Telkom and the government is feeding you.

This article is about an evangelist bitching about only bitching about the state of telecoms in ZA.
At least the business sector got to have their little bit of bitching thrown in.
Now, who is going to action the solutions ?
The only people capable are the ISP's and they're struggling to survive, so they don't have the resources to take on governmint.
What a tight web teklom and governmint have weaved.

Net effect of article :: scare away foreign investment more quicky than before.
Oh well - my mumblings are getting boring.

Government doesnt often listen to common sense or constructive criticism so hopefully this article will awaken some brain cells.

Brilliant

Excellent article.

The Government in SA are really a slack bunch. They have had so many years to do something.
How many opportunities have been lost because of poor management in Government? The writing has been on the wall for so many years. It couldn't be any clearer.
What must we do to get these people to see the light?

One can only draw conclusions that the State is playing a money game, using its 38% share in Telkom to make as much money out of the SA Consumer while they can. And of course the rest of the shareholders of Telkom stand back rubbing their paws together waiting for their dividend cheques.
While the SA Consumer who spent countless billions putting Telkom on the Map over decades gets a toffee for the tax monies and accounts that were paid so diligently.

I agree on the "let the market decide" ideology...

Free up the sector for new entrants with as little as possible red tape.

Cheers
