Can anyone please advice on how to configure the linksys WRT54G without too much lingo?

Try buy a wrt54g v3.1 or wrt54gl (not wrt54g v5) . They can do a lot more.

What do you want the wrt54g to do?

I assume that the UTD will be connected to the Router.

What do I typically need to do to the router for it to accept my laptop (including setting up WPA and the firewall)?

What do I need to setup on the laptop for it to be able to access the internet? Will this instructions be any different if I connect the router to a desktop computer (I assume via the PC ethernet port)?

BTW, that's what I'd like to know not necessarily what georgerufus wants to know.

The router has a "WAN" / "Internet" port on the back that you'll plug your UTD into...

Then you set up the router using WEP / WPA / None security settings as you please...

then all you need to do is set up the router with your username / password.

then just connect pc's to the router, either wired or wireless and then set the automatically acquire an IP address from the router and as long as the pc is connected to the router, it will have internet...

Makro sell the WRT54G and some other stuff in the Linksys Range.
No-Wire in Village Walk also sell them. About R750 if I remember

Both aren't the cheapest though. But you can just walk in and buy it.

it would seem that easy. I can access the router through its IP address. However when I try load a website (IE or FF), more than 5 minutes passes with no action. I go to the router page and it says i am connected to the internet. Is there something I need to change from my settings when I was accessing the net with the UTD connected straight to the PC?

Make sure DCHP is set on router and make sure to set IP to AUTO on pc...
alternatively you can set the ip within range of the router and the gateway to the router ip and the primary dns to the router ip

Please give me step by step instructions from the time that I am able to see the router through the IP address.

Essentially when I enter the routers IP address, are there particular setings that I need to set for iBurst.

After that, what are the step by step settings I need to do?

Arrgh I was being too cautious. It would seem for some reason i had disabled DHCP. Enabled that and everything was all good.

On the initial setup page, you should see a section that says "Internet Connection" or port or something (don't have a WRT54G to check). Under there you need to change it to PPPOE, I think the default is DHCP. I'm not talking about the LAN Connection or wireless, I'm talking about the internet port. Then it will ask you for your username and password. This is the username and password you got from WBS. Enter it in there. The router will then connect automatically.

If it doesn't connect goto the last tab, and click status. You should see a connect and disconnect buttom. just click connect.

Hope that helps.

I have a WRT54G v5. What settings do I need to enable to get a laptop to be able to use the internet connecting to the router. The laptop wireless is a Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200BG.

You need to choose the level of protection I have seen others suggest WPA and they say using this you need to add the user and password (of laptop) into the router setup somewhere and then set the wireless lan card ip to auto on the laptop.
