Congestion: Eldoraigne, Centurion (012 653 xxxx)

same here 653 XXXX and latency is bad.... Web Africa handles my line, and they are looking into it, maybe they can also pressure Telkom.

What is weird that it started all the sudden couple of days ago?

They are seriously messing up my multiplayer game time!

Hi,

@vaalpens: agreed: the more exposure the better.

@B3: I've been monitoring latency for a long time and it gradually built up since the beginning of the year, but started peaking on the 2nd of Feb, which was when it was at its worst and has been repeating every evening between 6pm and 11:30pm. It might not be congestion on the back-haul, but it's certainly related to the amount of traffic passing through the exchange.

The exchange is mostly residential, which explains why it's running smoothly during the day. When people get home from work, they want to start updating their facebooks/twitters/news24s, etc. During this time the exchange gets really busy and latency (ping times) go up dramatically. And, of course, download speeds go down at the same time.

I have a number of friends in the same area and their latency goes up in the exact same pattern. It has little to do with the ADSL lines themselves, it's fer sure DSLAM or back-haul related.

OK, so a friend of mine requested a dslam port change at the exchange.

They moved his line from the nr 4 dslam to somewhere else (thinking its nr 1 dslam)
He now has a stable ping, but can only get a maximum speed of 4mbps (second tier ) product.

Here is the hilarious part: So since they changed the line, we had to call in again to upgrade the line to the highest speed available (max 4mbps)
the operator lady said that 10mbps was not available in the area :D ROFL

This is what's embarrassing about Telkom, their support staff are not well trained in basic network terminology.

Yes the exchange on that dslam hub is congested, they are unable to repair / upgrade it.

Contrary to popular Telkom services believes.

My line has been swapped to a different DSLAM but now I am only able to get 4mbs but the latency seems fine now

im also on 012 654 xxxx and kinda close to eldorainge, during the week from 6pm till 1pm i get around 12-15 ping, after 1pm it goes 80+ ping.

Hang on - so you're getting the opposite of the rest of us? Be happy dude.

Our problem is the congestion that starts at 6pm and only ends at 11:30pm in the evening. Right now (Sunday evening) we're getting an average ping time of 620ms. We're still waiting for the Hennopspark area manager for some feedback about the problem.

Guys, we will have to spam this on Telkom's twitter stream, and I'm sure we can force telkom to drop the 10mbps product from this area, as its obviously not supported. If this takes the ASA to do, so be it.

I'm also considering lodging a complain at the NCC for misrepresentation of their products.

On what dsl product are you?

Telkom has been very communicative about this with me and they are continuing to investigate the issue. However, we do need to raise the awareness from more than one person inside Telkom, so yes, please log tickets with Telkom and explain exactly what the issue is in terms of latency and that it presents itself between 6pm and 11pm (midnight some days).

Be clear and concise in your trouble report and keep the ticket open until they send somebody during the problem window. Note that it is the Eldoraigne/Hennopspark exchange. Be sure that you can repeatedly demonstrate latency by pinging (for example) smtp.saix.net. On an unloaded line, you should get less than 30ms to that server.

This evening was a little better than last night. Last night was a nightmare:

I suppose I can be happy but I'm not :/

I am on 2mb from Mweb

Have a friend in the same neighborhood near Mall @ Reds on 2mbps.
He gets no problems with his connection.

You will be surprised that you will not be able to increase your speed to 10mbps like the rest of us, it would seem that you guys are terminated on a different DSLAM (no 1 (we think)).

Very strange indeed.

"You will be surprised that you will not be able to increase your speed to 10mbps like the rest of us"

I am surprised. Asked in Jan 2014 if I could get 10mbps but was told the exchange can only do 4?

Starting to think of downgrading to 2mbs because that might be closer to what I am actually ending up with.

[SOLVED]

Hi guys,

Telkom made some changes to the exchange (or perhaps the DSLAM, not sure what exactly) and communicated back to me that I should test over the weekend. And it looks like they solved the problem for us! Since Friday, there has been zero latency issues (note the pretty green flatline in the graph below).

Absolutely fabulous. A special thanks to TelkomZA (Charl and his team) for persevering with solving this issue.

PS: To the group admins: the new .PNG to .JPG conversion looks just horrible and fuzzy. Please consider not re-compressing PNG files to JPG for files that are already small. Sies man.

According to Telkom website we can get 10mb line ...

But on another note Im still having problems, so I guess I'll Telkom again and again times many :(

mine is still bad.... I would get good responses < 50ms, then suddenly it would go > 1000ms to timeout for a while, then good ones then bad, etc. Overall I still get more bad than good.

here it recovers for a minute or so, then go up again...

Are other factors taken into account?
- What exactly are you pinging?
- What is your line-load like during this time
- What is your sync-rate like?
- With which ISP are you?

When doing latency checks, one should typically ping the first-hop IP with a minimum of 20 packets and work out the average latency between them. Repeat this every 60-300 seconds and graph. Only then can you see a real trend. Also include pinging your own default GW to rule out any local LAN/Wifi issues.

Maybe post a traceroute during a "good" ping period and another during a "bad" ping period. Keep in mind that the latency we saw previously was cyclic over a large window. If you have issues over very short intervals it likely points to something else, perhaps on your line.

My DSL has been fixed, confirmed!

I'll post a speed test and tracert later today.

Thanks for the effort Telkom
