I've got a HTC MTeoR with an HSDPA package. I've set up the phone as a usb modem on my laptop in order to connect to the internet but I can only connect at 921kps.
Does any one know how I can connect at 1.8Mbps?
I've taken a look at using the Vodafone desktop connect but once I've finshed setting the connection up, it does not log in. Also, the htc is not in their list of phones.

From what I understand, 1.8 Mbps is the theoretical maximum speed of the network and you will achieve a lower speed based on your signal strength and the number of users in your area. I think 921kps is in the HSDPA speed range.

What do you get get when you run the test on http://speed.vodacom.co.za?

Where my problem comes in is when I setup the phone as a modem on my laptop. When you install the drivers on a pc for the phone it creates a com port for you to add it as a modem. This work 100% and I can connect to the internet but when I try and modify the baud rate, the highest value that I can select is 921000. Is there a way to to get round this and select a higher value?
The http://speed.vodacom.co.za/ only show my connection in the 3G area (I can't recall the avg speed, but it doesn't get to hsdpa speed).

perhaps its because the meteor isnt an HSDPA phone?

On Windows the setting you select is irrelvant, the modem will still connect at HSDPA speed. Not sure on Windows Mobile.

I'd first test it before I get worried. Run the speed test and post the results.

Are you 100% sure you've got a HSDPA contract and not a 3G one? Check with 155. If you upgraded from a normal phone you might still be on GPRS/3G.

I subscribed for the HSDPA package when I got the Mteor. To confirm the connection speed, I inserted my SIM into the Vodafone Mobile Connect card and managed to connect at 1.8Mbps via the Vodafone desktop Connect software. I however not think about checking my speed on http://speed.vodacom.co.za/

Again, the speed reported when connecting is not an indication of actual connect speed. Best is to run the speed test and check your upload download speed.

Anything higher that 384 in the download or 64 in the upload indicates you're definitely on hsdpa. Run a few tests to get a more general feel of your throughput.

I just checked with 155 on my package. They confirmed that I am on the HSDPA package.
Would the fact that I don't get into the red area in the speed test be related to the network usage in my area?
I will run the speed test tonight via the phone and data card and post my results/findings.

Could be, if so we must fix that. Let's get the results and then make a call.

I ran some tests on Friday night using my MteoR as the modem.
Around 7:00pm I got close to 365kbps. Around 9:00pm I was getting around 560kbps. Then at around midnight I was into the 1100kbps.
1. When network traffic was low I was able to get HSDPA speeds
2. I think this answers all the questions on whether the MteoR has HSDPA functionality.

I can confirm that the MTeor does have HSDPA if flashed to the SA version of code. It is only the Euro version which does not have HSDPA.

Anyone else here having the battery-drain issue after using data connection (esp if 3G/HSDPA is enabled)?

Hi all,

i just received my Mteor and also want to use it as an HSDPA modem.
I have confirmed the local Mteor's are def HSDPA.
i have set it up and it works but what gets to me is the way windows interprets the speed. As already said, the modem baud rate in windows can only be set to a max of 960k... now does this limit the speed so that it can only go that fast even if it wants to go faster? or does the speed that windows say mean nothing compared to the real one.

my phone is new Jay so i will see what happens as it goes along, but one thing i did notice is how hot the phone gets when used as a modem... but windows mobile is know as a more battery/resource intensive O.S, so that is expected to have less battery life on the phone. To be honest, i rather have windows mobile with less batterlife than a boring symbian OS that lasts longer

Hi,
The windows connect speed is just that a "connect speed" you can set a 56k modem to 960k connect speed, dosen't mean it connects or runs at that speed it means it can connect up to that speed, once connected the modem run's at the modems speed be it 56k or 1.8M
