Hi

A strange question which will betray my limited knowledge of how these things work. If a company has set up a private APN to allow mobile 3G users to access the corporate network, is it possible to connect to that APN from another wired network over the internet without using a mobile carrier? In other words to use the APN as a form of VPN access that does not require the user to be connecting via GPRS/3G?

Thanks for any advice.

Probably, but let's take it from the mobile side.

Creating a corporate apn, allows a pre-selected set of mobile devices to see each other. Basically a 'mobile-vpn'.

You can now run a fixed line from your corporate network into this vpn, making it into one big network.

Another network that can route into your corporate network can also now be part of the corporate / mobile vpn network.

Obviously the routing tables, firewalls, etc will create the proper security environment.

Thanks - but am dealing with a situation where I am on another network, and the VPN solution offered is just not optimal at present for the applications, whereas the APN access is much better. Am trying to exploit the APN without paying mobile data charges.
