So i bought an 8 port ethernet/lan box and connected a laptop to it to get onto the internet, now i wanna connect another laptop onto it but this one has no Lan port and only a telephone jack and a network jack, is there away i can connect this one to the Lan hub i already have my desktop connected. thanks.

You can buy a straight-through Ethernet cable from any PC shop, and plug it into the hub.

Do you use static or dynamic IP's? (ie is the router allocating IP addresses?)

ok but if the second laptop does not have a Lan port where do i connect the cable in?

you say it has no LAN port, but it does have a network jack?

they are the same thing.

The network/LAN port is just a slightly bigger version of the phone jack port.

"and a network jack"

Difference between a network jack and a LAN jack?

ie: RJ45 & RJ11

so if i plug the lan cable in the network jack i will get internet?
(these are oldish laptops).
sorry guys i am a noob at these things i just wanna learn.

ok guys my daughter is in the room lets keep it clean ha ha. ok i plugged it in and the lights went on on the cable but it seems the internet settings are out.

go to device manager and see if it shows a network adapter. and be sure it's enabled in the BIOS, or it won't show in device manager.

and if you see a device, go to netowk in the control panel, select properties, select tcp / ip, and set it to obtain an ip and dns automatically,

network wizard only gives me a dial-up connction box (this laptop has a built in 56k modem) so it wont give me a lan connection.

do you see a network adapter in device manager?

Please tell us this isn't windows 98 we're dealing with here - this laptop of yours is not that old...

i am not sure if its 98 or 2000 will have to check tonight. i used to be connected via 56k modem on pre-paid internet with this laptop but now as i am on adsl i wanna set it up for my baby as she plays games online.

can i install windoze XP and if its possible how will it affect the network settings if this thing has a built in 56k modem?

To know if you can install XP it would help if you posted the laptop's specs: processor, ram, etc. I've put XP on some pretty old pc's with no more than 128 Mb of ram and a PII 700 Mhz processor. For emailing and internet they ran fine. But online gaming (your daughter)? Perhaps not with those specs. You'll need at least a P4 1.6 and 512 Mb ram. (IMHO).

As to your second question: If the laptop has onboard LAN, (which is likely given it has a RJ45 LAN port), any OS will see it no problem. If not, then you will need a pcmcia network adapter. Those are the only two ways you are going to get ADSL internet on the lappie. (I'm assuming it doesn't have wireless...) Once again, post specs - or at least the make and model of the thing.

Edit: if the laptop has usb and you have a telkom mega 105 adsl router then you can use the usb cable instead of rj45 / LAN.
