After you found it in the list, did it install, and do you now see two printers under the printers section of the laptop?

The network one should have a symbol underneath the icon showing it is a network printer.

yes both are on and if i print a word doc from the laptop i see it reflect on the desktop under the printer box where it shows the docs to be printed but nothing happens on the printer , i get no error messages.

The only other thing I can suggest is changing the workgroup and pc names. Both the pc and laptop must have the same workgroup but different names: eg of workgroup name: wayne-home
eg of pc name: wayne-pc
eg of laptop name: wayne-laptop

If you right-click on the "My Computer" icon, under the second tab should be options to change the workgroup and name.

Thereafter restart both the pc and laptop; delete the network printer already under printers (delete all items in print queue as well); re-add the network printer. When you go to browse this time however, look for your workgroup name eg. wayne-home [as above].

was thinking it might be that. i also tried to print from the desktop but that is the same. let me change the names then and see what happens.

i think this has been asked but i am not sure.

when you share files between 2 computers can you only "pull" a file or whatever from another pc or can you actually "push" a file from 1 pc to another?

When you set a drive/folder for sharing if you do not enable the option "allow users to change my files" then will you can only copy from that drive/folder [pull]. But if that option is enabled you can modify the files on the drive/folder as well as copy addition files to that drive/folder [push].

Hope that helps.

hi again. i am so excited about the setup you helped me with that i wanna see what else it can do.

i will check and test what you just said now.
