How would I connect my MBP to my 40" LCD without using the DVI cable? Is it possible to buy a DVI to HDMI adapter then connect it to the HDMI port on the LCD?

Yes that would work (probably).

Otherwise if the LCD has a "PC-input" (normal VGA connector), you could use the DVI-to-VGA connector that comes with the MBP & a VGA screen cable.

From what I've heard, using the "PC-input" normally works better for displaying an image from a computer, due to the resolution auto-detecting, etc. ... but don't quote me on that.

I had to buy one recently for a client, but just so you know, DVI to HDMI adapters are about R1300 - Elctrovision at Cresta have them.

Great scott man - did you check Makro - they are around R260 there - going to get an HDMI cable today so will check the price and post back here.

Gee dude, i'll rather burn DVD's for all the .avi's i watch then spend R1300 for an HDMI adapter.

And i'm guessing that adapter doesn't even support sound??

I paid R399 from Makro for a Sony v1.3a cable - 1 meter. Let me know if you saw any of those adapters...

I got a DVI to HDMI cable (3 meters length) from Computer Mania in Canal Walk in Cpt. Paid 199 for it. It worked when I plugged in my cable for the first time into my plasma and when I tried changing the resolutions it didn't work again. It's a matter of tweaking the resolutions because sometimes the pictures on the LCD/Plasma aren't at the right size. I might be wrong here but VGA is not the way to. It won't be able to get all the right resolutions. Mine only connected at 1024x768.

They got a DVI to HDMI cable - R470. Lots better than R1300.

thats so weird... Not sure what it was that i bought, but the cable was originally R1700 and I got him to bring it down to R1300... it's unusual to have something so dramatically over priced?? it was definitely a DVI to HDMI cable. hmmm

It probably depends on the brand - I wanted a Component cable last Friday from Hi Fi - there were ones for R899. Told the salesman he's crazy and he showed me the Digitech cable for R169 - got that instead.

Handy cable I got with my Philips LCD is a component to VGA - the Philips has a VGA input. Use it either way around Macbook VGA converter to component on the Philips or Component output on the DVD player to the VGA input on the Philips - all work fine.
