Connecting to the internet through a PCI wireless adapter

Hi, I hope someone here can help me.

We got adsl the other day, and eveything is working fine. Our account and line is working perfectly.

The problem I'm having is connecting to the internet through a PCI wireless adapter. The router (a Telkom Mega 105WR router with 802.11g wireless access) itself is in another room 18-20 metres away from where my PC is.
I inserted the PCI wireless adapter (a RaLink 'Wireless-G' 802.11g enabled adapter) and installed the drivers. Now the blasted thing doesn't come with any real instructions so I just installed what I think was right.

So in the setup I choose the "Ralink configuration tool" option in instead of the "Microsoft Zero configuration tool". I clicked next and chose the "optimize for WiFi mode" option instead of the "optimize for performance mode". It installs and then I'm stuck. I can see the router on my weird little Ralink application but everything is so complicated I can't get it working.

All i want to do is be able to connect to the internet through this wireless PCI adapter. Please help!

Don't you just have to set up a wireless network and then connect, put in the key and then fire up the browser.

Yep.

To OP:

On the router, you have to set up a Wireless Connnection, enable the AP (access point), enable security such as WPA1 or WPA2 with a pre shared key and at least TKIP or AES encryption.

You then use Windows or your wireless card's software to "pick up" the routers wireless connection and you enter the pre shared key, which you entered in the router and connect to it.

There's no other way. RTM.
 
I suggest using Microsoft Zero configuration tool, some of the software that comes with wireless adaptors is just crap.

I used a small Netgear card and the software was quite sophisticated. In search mode it was able to see the wireless networks, the Mac addresses and other things.

As far as I can see, your RaLink is set up to connect with 'G' only. You're using channel 11. It's seeing the router, which has security set, (SSID Hidden, WPA with a Pre-shared Key)

Try setting up wireless again on your PC.
Turn off security on the router for the time being.
Reboot the PC and see if it finds the network. You should see a little wireless icon in the bottom right of your screen. Click it and refresh the network list.
