Hi all.

With this lockdown, I have been designated to take home our server, so if the boss or other employee needs anything, I can email/drop box it to them. For the whole day I have been trying to setup a "home network"

I am currently using an Asus N14U router, connected to my fibre line for internet, and connecting my cctv etc.

I have now added a second Asus N14U router, which I would like to connect to the "main" router, so I can connect the server and my work PC to create a LAN Network. I am connecting these two LAN - LAN.

Details: First router IP Address is 192.168.1.1, DHCP enabled.

Second Router IP Address I set as 192.168.1.2, DHCP disabled.

Problem one: The second router does not have internet access. Problem two: I cannot log into Main Router "192.168.1.1" to try change any settings. I can howver log into the secondary router. I am still currently connecting via wireless. Using Asus Discovery, it shows both routers, but I can only configure the secondary router.

Throughout the whole morning, I have been battling to connect to the secondary router, and have reset it multiple times to get around this. I really do not want to reset the main router as it has all my port forwarding settings on it. I do have the backup file, but I feel like it is a waste to keep resetting these routers.

How do I get to configure the Main router once again, and how do I get to connect these two together to have internet access on both routers.

From the first router can you ping the second router?

On the second router have you tried disabling wifi and everything else and just use it as a switch. Have you setup the default gateway on the second router?

Where are you trying to access the first router config from? Plugged into the 1st or 2nd router?

Unlikely that a server is configured for DHCP. If it is then the IT guy should be fired.

On another note hope there is nothing confidential on the server. What happens with the backups? Loss of data through damage? Worst case you exposing the server with port forwarders to the internet and someone accesses it?

Get your boss to send you confirmation that you can take it home and connect it to your home (unsecured) network so your ass is covered.

Hi all.

1. For some stupid reason I am now able to log into the Main Router. Don't ask how so??
2. I have tried to Ping the second router from the first router - all works.
3. Our server is a Qnap NAS Server, running a second HD on Raid.
4. I setup the server myself a year or two back onto our company's network.
5. I do monthly backups onto an external HD. Still in the process of looking into cloud backups. (Any affordable suggestions?)
6. I need to check if the server is configured for DHCP, otherwise I will need to fire myself lol.
7. At the moment on my home server, I have not setup any port forwarding for the Server, I have just setup the server with a Static IP Address.
8. Our company is really small, only 3 of us, and we have not had a decent order for the last two years, so to get out IT specialists is not affordable. (sadly). We do all the IT ourselves (mainly myself).
9. We don't really have much confidential files on our server, as each equipment is sorta custom designed for the client, and to most people, it won't really mean much, but yeah I would like to prevent any risks of outsiders accessing anything. Since starting at the company 11 years ago, some IT technician set up a windows XP desktop PC for our server, which I doubt had any security features. I managed to eventually convince the boss to go for a NAS server, since all we have is files, not any software running from the server.
10. My boss insisted I take the server home.

Ping worked 100%. I have setup the default gateway on the second router. I am accessing the routers via WI-FI at the moment, I gave both routers the same wifi name and password, but manually changed the channels.

You're using a cable to connect the two routers? Make sure you're not connecting to the WAN port of either router. That or make sure you've assigned the WAN port to the LAN.
Yeah, i have connected using a cat 6e cable, not using the WAN ports. (the WAN port of main router is for fibre internet). Yeah, we just call it a "server" lol.

I have managed to get it sorta working, connected the NAS into second router, my work desktop PC is connected to the network via wireless ATM, and I can access files from the server. I am still not sure if the second router has internet access though, as the internet light on the second router is not on.

Well the NAS is setup with a static IP address, the work PC's are on auto. I should set the work PC's on static as well, but we had an issue a few years back with this, so left it on auto. The Plotter and printers are on static.

Gotta love the African way of doing DR :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Update to latest firmware, set second router to access point mode
Profit

Yeah, the main router is in the lounge, I am using my study as my office now, so the modem is a bit far. So i set up the second router closer to my study to run some cables to my PC and NAS, and to have the internet access for emails. I always had a second modem there, to increase the wifi signal, but it got clapped by lightning. Decided to add a second one as I have a spare one now. Was trying to figure out how I did it in the past lol
