Hi guys!

Here is an interesting one. I upgraded my line from 384kbps to 4mbps about two months ago. It now drops everyday at around 10:15am, sometimes about 10 times in 5mins. This has been ongoing for only 1 week. At first, there were no problems. Connection was stable and life was good. My job entails me to talk to clients over the internet using a program called JoinNet/Tutormeet.

So, I am online the whole day, and there were not any problems regarding connection or the connection dropping until last week Sunday. I phoned Telkom to ask whether or not my exchange supports 10mbps on the Friday and they confirmed it did. So, I phoned my ISP (SAOL) and asked whether or not they could try sync me at that speed. They did try, and advised me that it failed. Anyways, this is not important. So, on the Sunday while talking to a client my connection became so slow with a ping on www.pingtest.net of almost 4000 and I lost the client due to the 30 second delay between talking times. My ping is usually around 27ms.

On Monday, I started dropping at bout 1pm and from there onwards, my connection has been stable in the mornings up until about 10:15am and then it drops about up to 10 times in 5 minutes. Later on in the afternoon it becomes stable again, at round about 3pm with the occasional drop. This is FRUSTRATING me beyond recognition, as my friend that stay 2 houses from me has a stable connection at 6mbps.

Things I have tried:
(1) Replaced the POTS filter.
(2) Tried removing my phone completely.
(3) Reinstalling the router.
(4) Have my connection speed synched to 2mbps.
(5) Tried another router and had mine tested(becuase Telkom and SAOL said it might be overheating and that might cause the problem).
(6) Had a Telkom technician out(He couldn't find a fault from my side).
(7) Tried the connection on my other pc running windows XP(Same result).
(8) Tried another ISP(Afrihost). (I know it is not an ISP problem because Afrihost says "Network fully operational" everytime my router disconnects.)
(9) Tried replacing cables, the works!

Running out of ideas. Has anyone else had this problem? Or can someone please advise me, because I am losing out on business and it is also just frustrating to be dropped.

ADDITIONAL information:

I have a all-in-one Line rental with SAOL for R399, that includes the line rental and 1gb free cap per month. But, I use my Afrihost connection most of the time because of faster connections, lower latency etc.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Kind regards

Try do a tracert when the line goes weird and when its normal and post it here

Also post your line stats

I once had a 384K at my old office, upgrade to 4 MB and has continous line drops. The telkom guys reduced the speeds until the connection was stable.THat was at 1 MEG
but after a while it started again and when the telkom technie came out , he said we were too far from the exchange for 4 Meg , so we reverted back to 384K

+1 to what Merenwenrago said.

You can find the line stats (SNR (noise) margins, Line attenuation & sync rates) on the router's web interface.
If you can't find that stats page, post your router model # here.

Hi guys. Have had a look. I cannot find it on my new router. It is a Netgear DG834G v5 ADSL2+ router. I am just waiting for the connection to go bonkers tomorrow morning, then I will post the stats from the tracert ASAP. Will have a look so long Pada if I can find the stats page.

Thank you guys.

Those statistics are fine as well.

You will start getting line stability issues as soon as a Noise Margin drop below 12 dB.
Your Line Attenuation & SNR margins are good enough to get a stable 4Mbps connection! Your Downstream Noise Margin would drop about 6dB when you change to 4Mbps, but the Upstream should be unaffected since the upstream speed would remain the same.

Dropped again just after 10am

Hi guys, sure as heck, it dropped again this morning bout 20mins ago. It dropped three times in prob about 2 mins just after I switched my computer on. Here is the stats:

System Up Time 02:03:59
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN PPPoE 7451 9012 0 113717 571354 00:00:13

WLAN -- -- -- -- -- -- --

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2048 kbps 512 kbps
Line Attenuation 34.5 db 19.0 db
Noise Margin Showtime db 13 db

And....

System Up Time 02:03:59
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN PPPoE 7451 9012 0 113717 571354 00:00:13
LAN 100M/Full 10403 10503 0 1082 291 02:03:38
WLAN -- -- -- -- -- -- --

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2048 kbps 512 kbps
Line Attenuation 34.5 db 19.0 db
Noise Margin Showtime db 13 db

It looks the same as above, but the connection just terminates. Did it again while I was typing.
Where should I go from here. Virus? My system's NIC? Don't know anymore.

Thank you for the help and advice guys, really do appreciate it a lot.

Wazup with the "Noise Margin Showtime db" ? Something doesn't seem right there!

Your ADSL shouldn't disconnect due to a faults with the PC, but the ADSL could easily disconnect due to interference.

Perhaps you've installed the POTS filters incorrectly?

All the telephone devices (fax, alarm, telephone & ADSL) has to pass through a filter before it can be connected to the Telkom line.

If you haven't installed the POTS filters correctly, your ADSL should disconnect whenever something makes a call of if you receive a call.
