Maybe somebody can help me out with this. I have a netgear DG632 modem/router (configured to run in router mode) which I used to have plugged directly into my PC and all my internet apps worked fine.

Now I want to share this connection with other PCs so I bought a switch and plugged the router in it along with my other PCs (all running XP Pro). The PCs TCP/IP settings are all set to 'auto' as prescribed by the Netgear manual. Now the wierd thing is that IE and Outlook express both work perfectly but other net apps like Opera, sasa and a chess app I use to play online return errors and cannot connect to anything. If I check the ipconfig I also see that the PCs are correctly assigned IP addresses by the router so that part seems fine.

Does anyone have a clue as to what's going on here?

Remember that this product also has a built-in firewall. Have you made sure that all of your firewall rules are in place?
