Hi, My cell c E1820 dongle keeps switching between HSPA+ and HSDPA. The problem is, it happens when I am playing games online. The game starts lagging and its impossible to play any further. My signal strength is 98%. I tried using MDMA but it still happens.

Have any of you guys experienced a similar problem and is there any known fixes?

This is normal. When your connection is idle you should even see it display 3G. This is not the same as switching from 3G to 2G, when you are actually being handed over from the UMTS network to the GSM network. In your case you are staying on the UMTS network, but you are just seeing the different protocols being used depending on the traffic you are generating.

I think you are somehow losing packets, and because you are losing packets your connection is seen to be idle and you see the protocols changing.

Same thing here.(Honeydew Ridge) I"ve moved my modem to a window where it only picks up EDGE. Much less frustrating.

If they"re launching tomorrow I hope it comes right.

Just to update. I solved the problem. The cellc app was way off with my reception strength. I used the MWconn program, it displayed my signal strength at only 28%. I moved my dongle round and got my reception up to 40% and the problem was solved. :)

Yeah I had the same issue on the 7.2 modem it keeps switching between WDMA and HSPA, while your connection is idle it is parked to to speak until you need it, my problem is sometimes it just doesn't connect from idle happen twice now that I simply could not connect even with 98% signal... The guy at CellC confirmed it works that way and it is congestion or network issues... will just have to grit my teeth for now and it means I cannot get rid of my unnamed backup internet connection lol...

It happened to me last night while playing FIFA 11. I had just scored an amazing goal with Andre Arshavin, and then the signal switched from HSPA+ to HSDPA while using MDMA. I am guessing that it is still early days for Cell C and am going to just be patient. But now on Xbox live it shows that i have quit 20% of my games. But i havent. Sucks

Is there anything that can be done to stop the E1820 speedstick from cycling back and forth between WCDMA and HSPA+?

Connection dead on 3G (Blue) but fine on 3.5G (Cyan)

I got the 5gb bundle at the begininning of the month. The signal was weak (20% or so) but speeds where acceptable and the connection was stable for short periods.

On Monday I started getting 70%-90% signal. However, when I connect, the connection is really unstable. When the modem led is blue, the connection is dead but , when it changes to cyan, I get fantastic speeds. The problem is that the modem is always switching so the connection is really unusable.

I tested using my cell phone as a modem. I notice the same behaviour when switching between 3g (dead) and 3.5g (great).

I've sent a mail to the online support address but maybe I'm missing something simple. Anybody else experiencing this problem?

I'm in the Honeydew area.

Could be that the signal is fluctuating. Do you notice the signal change when it switches between 3g and 3.5g?

I dont notice a signal change but it seems the cell c app's signal indicator isn't very accurate. I'll try post an MDMA log tonight.

Why does my black modem keep on switching between 3G modes?

.... switching between HSDPA,HSUPA and WCDMA?
What is the difference between these modes?

Mine's always on WCDMA before I connect, but as soon as I connect, it switches to HSDPA - then when I disconnect, it goes back to WCDMA.

Your guess is as good as mine, though. Using the white modem btw.

My white one is the same. No idea what it means.

I would assume its because you are not getting a stable signal.
Are you within the full coverage area?
Maybe move around, I find in the same house I get different connections depending on where I position the router.

Switching through the "3G modes" is normal. When you generate traffic it will ramp up (Cyan). When your connection is idle it will ramp down (Dark Blue). If however you a flapping during high traffic times it could indicate signal or tower issues.

A background ping is generally enough to keep it ramped up.

Well thats the issue. I use it at work and cant really walk around. It is in the red zone and my signal strength some times is 98%, but it seems to go to sleep or something constantly switching to dark blue instead of cyan.
I dont lose connection it just falls asleep it seems.
