Hi, I got my phone line installed a few days ago. Which was quite a surprise as I was only supposed to get it in late September. But, it doesnt seem to be working :| fantastic.

I can recieve calls but if I try to dial out I get a disconnected tone. I did a self install with my ADSL but I'm not having any luck, I'm assuming it is because of the no outgoing calls issue? It doesnt really make much sense.

I'm using the crappy usb pots modem for now, while I wait for my router to arrive. My DSL icon basically says "no connectivity" or "waiting for connection". I'm trying to figure out whether its the modem or the line before I kill myself trying to get the modem to work.

Any suggestions?

Our company had some ADSL lines installed a while ago and 2 of them did exactly the same we had to get telkom to come out again to get it fixed.

Sounds like your adsl modem is not synching(usb Telkom modem icon black?) and a call block on your line ? check with accounts + help desk maybe?

Thanks krycor, I did phone them, I just like to get a little clued up before I do speak to anyone there so as to not get #$%^ around. I've got it unblocked, but would that be what is causing my synching error?

Hrm ok assuming when you called they checked that the ADSL port is set to active(ie not blocked too), then the next step would be to check your physical connections.Adsl modem has a phone cable plugged into it, going straight into the wall jack ie making sure it does not go thru a adsl filter(some wall sockets have it built in but shot adsl socket + phone socket).

The icky thing about ADSL usb modem is the black icon is sometime also an indicator for your pc not seeing the modem :/ Check this by right clicking on the my computer icon and then clicking properties. clikc on hardware and then device manager. Under modems or network devices check to see if a normal green icon is there called what 'your modem rfc' or somthing. If there is a red 'X' over it right click on it and enable it. If it appears under other devices with a '?' on it you need to reinstall the drivers.

Also check the modem itself, check and see if the modem powers up etc

Heres a surprise. It turns out my hardware and config are fine...
Some one at Telkom cancelled my ADSL order. I phoned in and after being given wrong numbers, put on hold for 30 minutes etc etc, the guy I was speaking to said "oh.. it looks like some one cancelled it" followed by confused mutterings.

heh thats why i sugested you get them to check port status, if your line gets blocked its possible your adsl port is blocked too. So was your port assigned to someone else already? if so i hope for you your exchange is not busy/loaded with adsl orders :/

Weird chaps......just plain 'ol WEIRD!!...Want to tell me if your line is blocked, so is your ADSL connection??...If its true, ive just learned something about Telkom :) cause far as i know its 2 diff type of "handshaking/connections"

They said it should be up by the 6th of September...
I'm going to keep phoning them to make sure they know I'm doing(have done) a self install. Just incase some guy arrives at my door asking for R400 to plug my router in.

As far as the phone line/adsl line goes I can confirm that they are totally independant. The reason I know that is because when I moved my line, everything worked great for the first day. The next afternoon the adsl was perfect but my phone line had been rerouted back to my old place and I had zero dial tone at the new spot.

yeah seperate but when lines get blocked for e.g. non payment etc both get blocked and adsl takes longer to re-enable :/

Well they said they would have it done by the 6th of September, I've left my modem plugged in and on Friday night the little ADSL light went green.

So I'm connected. Took 2 days. Thats pretty good...

They phoned me today and asked if they could come in on wednesday to do an install, I told them not to bother. I did after all sign up for a self install.
