Considering downsizing my car...

Get an Alfa Mito 1.4T.. going for 228500 new.. thats with most of the bells and whistles... and its 114kw... so not to shabby.. and fuel consumption is low :) and its a lot sexier than a mini !

only thing is.. it is an alfa.. so won't hold resale like you want. But will give you an awesome driving experience :)

Very nice car.

Although I'd wait a year and get one used for like R170k.

I'm not saying the Prius is rubbish, just that it is certainly not the holy grail of economy cars. It is still a car, running 100% off fossil fuel with a few energy saving measures to improve urban economy. It is also pricey, so take the difference in price between it and another economical car into consideration, rather than just the L/100km. In the same way, most diesel cars are not more economical over 100 000km than an equivalent petrol car. Diesel should be chosen for performance/L rather than just cost saving.

Message to those who know me: When you find me paying 228k for a 1.4 Alfa, that will definitely depreciate by at least 100k in the next 6 months, please shoot me!

Hate to be picky picky, but the OP did mention a car with decent second hand value...you cannot beat the MINI for that...the Alfa rates with Rhino Bakkies as far as crap resale goes...

fixed for you...

To paraphrase Mr Clarkson, "Alfas even look fast just standing in your driveway... which is a good thing, because they break down so often that they'll spend a lot of time there" ;)

I think u have your answer, go for the Mini cooper s, it fast, classic looks (probably always will be) has the best resale value of any car. You dont look like a d!k drivin one if you are 30, 40, 50 or 60! Only thing is the middle console thing sux ! but hey thats just my opinion.

Funny you should say that, I've independently come to the same conclusion! My wife used to have a Cooper and then a Cooper S cabriolet, which she sold to get a more grown-up car (Audi A4). She's always regretted it, so if I do buy one, I think that I'll end up driving the Audi...
