looking at something smallish that I can sell in two year's time without taking a bath.

Ideally fairly powerful, comfortable, R250-R300K price range. Since I do quite a bit of rush hour driving in Jozi, auto transmission would be nice.

My options at the moment are slim it seems. Does the new golf 6 1.4FSI highline come with auto box?

You will take a bath on a new car. Not sure what you mean with smallish, but why don't you look at something like a 1 series BMW, with steptronic.

You should be able to find the 6 cylinder 130i in that price range - used. I think they go for R350k new.

Golf GTi DSG? They are on special, as the new model is coming soon. Also have good resale value even with high mileage.

my advice is go with something slightly used, like demo ... will save a great deal ... imo the golf 6 is overpriced and i see them discounting the cars soon ...

I'd rather buy a fairly newish Golf GTi DSG in that 250-300k bracket ... you just cant go wrong ... you can get a 2008 with very low mileage with all the toys for around R250k/R260k ... and a new one for under R300k negotiating a discount

AAAAAAAARRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!! You guys are talking telephone numbers...small car...HUGE price!! :(

Consider the Honda Civic Hatch 1.8VXI Automatic. It has all the creature comforts you could want in a car, including heated seats, auto lights, rain-sensing wipers and rear park-distance control. A brand-new one will set you back around R280k (but haggle for the price!) and it comes with a 5 year / 90,000km maintenance plan. Comfortable, spacious and enough power for daily use.

I'm driving one right now and I can vouch that the fuel consumption is really good. I'm averaging about 7.8l / 100km right now with about 2500km on the odo. If you decide to get one, visit Honda Midrand - their service is excellent and you'll be able to haggle for a lower price as well.

EDIT: I just remembered, the Hatch AUTO was only released in SA in March '09, so its quite fresh as well. Has some slight, but noticeable differences on the outside compared to the manual version. Also has some spec that's not available on the manual OR the Type-R...

maybe u can try the corsa opc ... that is small, and got good power. +1 is it is a new shape, will be good for another 3 yrs...

Good deals on 1-2 year old Priuses for like R169k. They're very nice as traffic cars, also come with a 7 year complete maintenance plan, so running costs will be low. :D

Congrats on the first reasonable answer!! I cannot see how someone can "downsize" to a R300 000 car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe I have never earned real money, but to see these numbers thrown about as if it's going to put no dent in your bank account is bloody scary!

Geez man - the Corsa OPC is almost R250k (or thereabout)! Very expensive for such a little car!!!

lol. The magic of of car allowances and leasing... A modern car is not an investment but a tool, and you merely pay for the usage. I drive around a lot, and I don't see why I shouldn't be comfortable.

My "downsize" is size related, I'm currently driving a Volvo S60, but I don't need anything as physically large. Also, it is thirsty, so I'd like to do my bit for the environment ;)

That said, I don't particularly like Opels, or the BMW 1 series... The Golf GTi is an option if I can get a good price on a demo or suchlike. When is the new one coming?

that said, screw the GTi, its a kiddy wanna be racer car.... rather the the A3 sportback 2.0T (exact same as GTi performance wise). Take the DSG box, its bloody fantastic. +1 it has just had the facelift - good for 3rys or so. Also the sportback is better looking than the plain A3 and it is more functional.

but the Gti holds it's value better than the A3... go figure...
