Consistently unable to resolve host names

Hi everyone, :(

I signed up for 3G 5 months ago (my company signed us up) and i have only been able to browse the internet 5 times. Every single time i connect, it refuses to resolve host names. All of the 5 times i have been able to browse the internet must have been complete fluke as i changed nothing, it would just work (the next day it wouldn't work again). I have spent hours trying to sort this out, i have phone 155 and one of the technicians tried to help but was unable to resolve the issue.
  • Modem: Huawei E220
  • Account Type: Contract
  • APN: i have tried internet and internetvpn
  • Firewall: Off
  • ipaddress that i get assigned from vodacom: 196.....
  • I cannot browse the internet using hostnames.
  • I can browse the internet using ipaddresses.
  • i cannot ping hostnames
  • i can ping ipaddresses
  • i can do a nslookup on hostname
  • i can not do a tracert on hostname (error says something like cannot find host)
  • i can do a tracert on ip

I have tried using the assigned DNS servers and i have tried using 196.43.1.11, 196.43.1.13 (which worked one day and the next it didn't).

When doing a tracert on the ipaddress i get a lot of timeouts
1 * * * Request timed out.
2 * * 350ms 10.113.96.1
3 * * * Request timed out.
4 * * * Request timed out.
5 * * * Request timed out.

Any help would be appreciated!

If you can do nslookup, it seems like your DNS resolution must work.

you don't maybe have a proxy configured?

Make sure you're on the internet APN and then do an ipconfig /all in a Dos box and post the output here.

Whoaaa, thanks for the super fast response :)

if i can do a nslookup then the dns resolution should be working ... Thats what i thought:confused:

I have unchecked all proxy options and automatic configuration in the browser internet options/connections tab. There is a network card in the laptop which is used for the network at work (when i use it at work) but i disable this at home. Is there perhaps another way to check if it is using a proxy or if a proxy is configured?

I only use the 3G in the evenings and the weekend, so i will only be able to give you the ipconfig /all results tonight.

That IP does not look correct, should be a 41.x.x.x IP.

What is your location?

Come to think of it morkhans ... you might be correct ... i think it is actually 41.x.x.x. I will check tonight when i do the ipconfig /all, and post the results.

I am on the West Rand, Little Falls, Gauteng

You're might be getting proxy settings from the office network. Check both your network settings and the browser settings as they often are configured separately.

Also check that you don't have fixed DNS entries in your network connections. Also check the 3G dashboard.

I'm pretty sure if you can get to a standard, vanilla setup, it's going to work. If the 3G-assigned DNS servers did not work, all hell would've broken out here already ;)
 
If it is proxy related, try using firefox as a check - it doesn't make use of IE's proxy settings.

Will check the fixed DNS entries in the network connection ... but as far as i can remember it mentioned something about "dhcp enabled" in the DNS box???:confused:

i did insert fixed dns entries in the 3G dashboard but i will remove them and see if i can get the vanilla working.

will try and get online a little later, cheers for now

hey guess what .... you guessed it!!! it didn't work again :)

i would have posted this last night but the ipaddress 41.203.17.1 that i got from doing a nslookup on "mybroadband.co.za" just wouldn't work.
i tried to go to "http://41.203.17.1/vb/" but it didn't like that.

Below is some stuff i tried last night
I checked and made sure there are no proxies in the browser.
I made sure there were no hardcoded DNS entries in all network adapters.

IP details look correct to me. You mentioned earlier that nslookups were working. Were they also working last night? Did pings on IP still work? traceroutes are always bad because they are often blocked by ISPs.

yip, i used nslookup last night to get the IP of "mybroadband.co.za".

traceroutes often blocked by ISPs? thanks, will remember that!

is there any tool/cmd/application that will tell you the "route" that your machine would take to resolve a hostname? this would make life easier!
 
The only other suggestion I have is that you test your modem on another machine and if possible also another SIM from a friend that you know works.

A nice tool I have used on FreeBSD & Linux is called tcptraceroute. It does not suffer from ISP blockage ;)
