Console war delayed

I haven't heard any rumours about the PS3 being delayed in the states... That would be disastrous for Sony.

Not only would the Xbox 360 get a 2 xmas head start but the next gen xbox could then appear 2 years before the PS4 even without the normal Sony delays... That could really hurt them.

I also see the author didn't mention that the expected price of the PS3 will be R6500...

The delay, according to the article, excludes the US
First, Sony has announced that it's delaying the launch of its next generation gaming console - PlayStation PS3 - from November to March next year in all markets outside North America and Japan.

EDIT - just to clarify I'll take confirmed announcements over rumour any day.

With the XBox 360 priced at R2?699 for the entry-level model and R3?699 for the more fully featured version, it's not a toy for the masses.

is that converted US pricing? because south africa will get the european version so if you gonna convert you will have to convert from pounds.

Have2Have currency have the xbox360 preium priced at R7850

Given a UK price of 299 pounds I dont recon the XBox 360 will drop below the R4500 mark....

reports are already filtering in that it may even delay its US launch until early next year, causing it to miss the vital Christmas spending season

The local price has been announced as stated in the article. The early importers were just ripping off anyone who couldn't make their own arrangements. Do they sell the UK or US model? You can bring a US one in for under R4500, a UK one for under R5500, so you're paying at least R2300 for what, local support, a local warranty? For that kind of premium I'd expect an instant turnaround on problems or they give me another unit while mine gets repaired.

The above makes the official local price very good.

R3699 and R2699 are the correct prices here. Kalahari, digital planet, bt-games, musica (or look and listen, can't remember which now) all have the XBox 360 at that price. Have2Have have it at that as THEY are importing it. The difference is that Microsoft SA are selling it here, so no imports and exchange rate conversions and shipping costs to factor in (they'll be spead across a very large number of consoles).

Dude, don't be stupid. Just go to www.incredible.co.za, they've got the prices there.

However, it's proving difficult for Sony to produce enough drives to fill the needs of its PS3 production schedule, and reports are already filtering in that it may even delay its US launch until early next year, causing it to miss the vital Christmas spending season.

Like I said, I haven't heard of any rumours to the US launch being delayed and I don't believe it for a second....

greggpb: as many people have already said the official release happens on the 29th of September 2006 for SA. I have already pre-ordered mine from www.btgames.co.za for R3699 and I get a free football (why? I have no idea but I'll take it :))...

The standard xbox is R2699....

What....

However, Microsoft chose to make an earlier launch date by eschewing the bleeding-edge technologies and delivering its XBox with a standard DVD drive. Though that means those looking to play high-definition DVDs on their XBox will be disappointed in the SA market, where HD has yet to make a ripple, let alone a splash. So it's unlikely to be a key buying factor.

That was the whole point of me wanting to buy a Xbox360... oh well, seems like i will have to wait for the PS3 then...

Microsoft Marketing Crap

Cindy White, group marketing manager at Microsoft SA, says that local consumers are benefiting from the year's difference from the original Xbox 360 launch, as they'll have access to a much larger catalogue of games than those available then.

Sorry Microsoft, this is such a lot of marketing blah blah

Have you been dealing with Telkom lately? Oh, that's right, IP-TV...

How did we BENEFIT from not having to the X-Box 360 for a year, only now to get the whole catalogue?

By that same token, it’s better to sit without broadband while we are being ripped off, and then in ten years time, you start using e-mail in your business when the market is more open.

thedudeman, 3GisDaMan :iirc the xbox 360 hasn't come out *anywhere* with a HD DVD drive. It was launched a couple of months ago as a separate accessory. The PS3 is the only console to have a HD player built in (Which is the main cause of the high price. The Blue Ray drive is estimated to add $400 to the price)

Ok fair enough, i was under the idea that it shipped HD-DVD ready... so im guessing it will be an add on unit at some stage. Freaking Microsoft ;)
