Hi

I currently have a 4MB telkom line and have a unshaped ISP account with Afrihost. Streaming Video and download is fine, but Online gaming is so frustrating, My ping is always unstable, I keep getting kicked for ping to high or simply lag away. Changing ISP makes no difference, it is a single pc with router with nothing running in the background.Logged multiple incidents with telkom, they keep telling me its resolved but it is not and this has now gone on for months.

So my question is will upgrading to 10mb or even 20MB resolve this issue?

The bandwidth does not make a difference to latency. I would say that there is a lot of noise on your line somewhere or something with the DSL is not syncing 100% with the host but unfortunately I did not have a land line since the days of the 56k modem, so I am not in a position to give any further details with regards to this.

Bandwidth:
Imagine 1 truck = 1MB of bandwidth so for 4 trucks it is 4MB.
They travel 80KM/H constant so if you change this to 10 or 20 trucks, they will still travel a 80KM/h.
Okay, let us add traffic which cuts off the trucks and so on (noise) the trucks can not keep their constant speed thus it takes longer for the trucks to reach their distinction.

So if they physically upgrade the line, that might solve the issue but just upping the bandwidth, I would say no.

Of course it should. My ping is around 9ms but was 25ms on a 1meg line.

Theoretically the ping is unrelated to speed, but changing speeds often comes with a change of infrastructure to new and better DSL architecture, like MSANs, IMAX, and ISAMs, which results in better technology on both the exchange and the backhaul side, and it can also coincide with moving to a closer unit, so distance is reduced as well. So yes, oftentimes a line speed upgrade can result in better latencies, but only in certain circumstances.

Could you post a traceroute or pathping to telkom.co.za

Oh gee .... what a surprise ......

Let me guess .... AH told you its Telkom?

1. Does this happen at all times?
2. Post line stats from router.
3. Post some winmtr output.

Try a capped account from Webafrica to check if it is the ISP and not the line, else follow ponder's instructions.
