Yip, Not going to be happening anytime soon, but it is definatly on the way!

Because a lot of them are aimed at kids who do not know that they must read the fine print before signing up for that garbage.

Consumer protection bill will never work

Who is going to act against suppliers who contravene this brilliant piece of legislation ?

The same idiots who can't even repair a pothole, a leaky pipe, attend to crime, or know anything about the new flu ?

Who is going to take action ?

The public protector who can't protect anything ?
The police who need security companies to protect them ?
The justice system which is in shambles ?
The competition commission who has been so successful in allowing all those cell phone companies to rip us off ?
The labour dept who have their own labour problems ?
Or

Jacob Zuma who can't even balance his chequebook by himself ?

I'm sorry guys, but I think that this brilliant legistlation has no chance of successfull implementation.

The only reason that the NCA is working is because the banks are policing themselves. If they let Goverment do it, nothing would be done, and that's the problem with this act. It relies on a government department to police it.............

Several pieces of legislation are combined into this bill. That's an improvement. It also puts into law what were once guidelines. It imposes stiff penalties for transgressors. We will see what happens. It's weaker than it should be, that's for sure.

prime targets for the new bill
Telkom
Eskom
MTN Vodacom

and those are just the first few... well maybe telkom is immune?

The Consumer Protection Bill had been signed into law by President Kgalema Motlanthe, the Department of Trade and Industry said.

"The primary purpose of the new act is to prevent exploitation or harm (to) consumers and to promote the social wellbeing of consumers," the DTI said.

Motlanthe signed the bill on April 24 and it was gazetted on April 29.

So it's already law?

Hmmmmm... interesting times... :)

"Consumers will now be protected from the unscrupulous businesses that tend to induce them to waive the obligations and liability of the supplier in terms of agreement," Maseti said.

Including insurance companies?

We will have to see what sort of teeth this new law have... no good in implementing a new law with no teeth.
