Consumers fear portability rip-off

Portability Regulations provides for the originating operator to apply a warning tone before connecting the call to a ported number
Listern for the Beep. :p
Oh well - I was hoping for the scrapping of the cross network charge.
Siwwy boy I am.

Okay okay - after the TK race - read the entire article.
Options are:
A - Lookup on database and do recorded voice/sound indicating N/W crossiver, before doing the crossover.
B - Standardise the Packages across providers so that NW crossing charges are actual-cost based.

Standardise - LOL. Nope - aint going to happen.

Yeah, like the consumer are really worried that they are being charged a bit extra for phoning someone on a different network. If I phone someone on an aposing network, I still make the call, so whats going to change ?

I think the people that are really concerned here are the service providers. Thats what stops me from chaning to an oposition company, the fact that I must change my cell no and then inform all the people I know, what a pain in the butt.

If this happens, it will all come down to service at the end of the day.

The catch is that contracts typically do not state these charges.

So - if cell c are running low on cash - they can just up their cross-network charges, and make some extra cash, and then the person making the call gets ripped off, and the person making the call has no way of knowing that they're about to be ripped off. UNFAIR this is.

So - some control must be put into place.

I suppose, however the only reason why this would be a concern is because of all the con artists we have in this country (Cell phone Co incl) so as you say, should they decide to up the cross over charges without informing anyone, the public will get ripped off.

My view might be overly optimistic, but maybe once number protability is implemented, the cellphone operators will race to be the first offering "No extra cross-network charges, pay the same charge across all networks".

The number portability regulations have been gazetted. You can download them from ICASA's website.

They still did not provide an answer on how will company PABXs be able to bill different departments correctly.

I guess it couldn't hurt to look at how the problems surrounding number portability have been solved overseas.
