Content filtering on AfriHost Mobile

Hi Guys

Is there a way to block certain content on Afrihost Mobile, such as porn, adverts, trackers and spyware?

Reason being I have children in the house, and would like to block certain sites from little eyes. (Sometimes I'm using 3G as a fallback to ADSL when the ADSL is down due to lightning/power failure/hardware failure/telkom pulling wire/whatever.

If there's no content filtering, at least I'll be forewarned...
 
Just don't watch porn on your devices and the Ooklets won't have anything to see by accident :p

The only way I can think of, is if you run your MiFi through your IPcop box or whatever.

Are you using the MiFi device or your own router?

You can use the DNS option - but you'll need to change DNS on the device rather than the MiFi - it doesn't have a DNS configuration option.

How are you blocking these sites on your DSL though?

On a router you have the option of blocking say "adserve.google.com" using a url filter.

Hi

I'm using URL Filter for Smoothwall Express 3.0 (3.1 RC3 is out, still in beta testing, but have the same functionality)

Hey boet... thing is they've discovered a thing called google, and if they type in "lego games" it'll take them to lego games...

So proud of my kids... but dang scared if they'll want to google "fairies"... :eek:

So I'd rather have this filtering on and be inconvenienced by them than having them view miff and weird sites and having to answer a ton of uncomfortable questions :p


Ubuntu (it seems) accepts the AH mifi dongle, will experiment a bit whenever I get some time - maybe I can run the mifi through Smoothwall this way...

Yeah no I understand. As Afriman said, perhaps the best to make use of a safe-DNS? I know those are available.

Smoothwall is a dedicated software firewall, you can install it on any spare PC (Pentium2 with 512Mb RAM for example). Using it at work to cut out spyware etc. Never had any infection due to something downloading and installing itself.

There's other distros which you can install directly on routers etc, but I'm not quite familiar with those.

Will take a look at that option, as it's the only thing I can do on the mifi for now.

Meh,use an old spare PC to build a Zentyal/Smoothwall proxy server,set it up for transparent connection and block the sites
