Hi All,

Does Telkom SA provide content filtering at the ISP level?

One of our directors wants her boyfriend to stop surfing porn etc etc purely because he exceeds the monthly cap too early in the month.

She would like it done in such a way that he is unaware how the sites are being blocked.

I am stumped as to how to do this, so if you have any other suggestions I would be delighted to hear them.

Cheers.

um

you mean like just getting a "page cannot be displayed error" instead of an screen saying "you've been blocked by your girlfriend for surfing porn!!"

:D:D:D

Hmmm, i'd have to think about this one

but maybe she should worry more about his porn addiction and give him what he wants?

Dansguardian works well, we run it on ipcop. If you want you can load k9 just on his machine.

or Use OpenDNS's blocking facility ^.^

Keep in mind that ipcop requires a dedicated PC for firewalling and content filtering.

In my experiences with Smoothwall and Dansguardian, I would recommend a 1GHz+ PC with 512Mb (or better) RAM and a 40Gb HDD for good performance.

Smoothwall and IPCop all requires a dedicated PC.

IIRC Mweb also offers "kiddie-safe" ADSL accounts...

Yeah we run it on 1GHz, 512 RAM and 4GB HDD. All and all it uses roughly 1GB for the os/add-ons and 300MB for the proxy.

thanks for the responses guys.

I know some of us are like, "WHAT!?" "block p0rn?".....no way!!

thanks again.

you know though that the web isn't the only source of porn, if that avenue gets blocked he'll just find another way to get it, and still kill his cap. tell her to have a talk with him about buying his own prepaid he can surf porn with. i'm guessing bandwidth never was the issue though, she just doesn't want him looking at other women and/or porn :)

Having a kiddie-safe ADSL account from MWEB would be an awesome start if it's bandwidth related. Hey, some women don't mind it, because they know their SO's don't go out and actively looking for punani other than theirs....

Just keep in mind once he is blocked he will probably then try and buy his own account and change it on the router or whatever. But that's kind of the point. So that he doesn't waste YOUR bandwidth ;)

Otherwise, just get an uncapped account from Web Africa: Uncapped Express which has a 384kb limit during the day and uncapped/semi-shaped during evening hours.

That way your SO gets his fill of porn and you walk away able to do your things online without paying through the nose for someone else's addiction
