Sorry about such an arb thread. But I really find cell packages confusing, and i don't really trust my sp who just tried to upsell me to something i didn't need when they "analysed" my usage.

My typical monthly usage:
100 sms
100 calls (max. of which, 50/50 same vs other networks, 60% calls during peak).
200 - 300 mb data (500mb on a bad month)

I don't need a phone or 3g modem thanks.
But I also don't want to be feather VC's pocket if I don't want the "free" hardware, but still have to pay for it.
I can't use mtn because I have reception issues with them currently, but clear signal with VC.

the way i see it, i can either take a minimal contract, add a data & sms bundle and go month to month (no hardware).
or, i could take a data package, due to my relatively high data usage. no, i don't want a bb.
i'm not so keen on payg and i don't really see the benefit of top-ups for my current situation.

are there penalties if i move networks and downgrade once my contract has elapsed?

You could take a high Top-Up contract which would have lower call rates. Use part of the inclusive airtime to convert to data and sms bundles, and the remainder for your calls. How much are you currently spending a month, and are you currently on a contract?

thanks. i'll look into a topup.
i'm on a procall 120 but spending around R700/month.
i wasn't aware that you could exchange voice for data within a package on vodacom.
i know that's possible with mtn.
