I see MTN now realizes that more people are using their cellphones for internet. Now you can transfer your airtime to data bundles. About time. Or is this a rumour?

Lemme stop you there, that service is only for prepaid- i just made a couple of calls and confirmed.

which means all bonuses received & additional airtime is locked into MTN-to-MTN Airtime use -cannot be used to purchase data-. So for those on TopUp who frequently purchase airtime for data-bundles, it makes the airtime useless. I'm currently sitting with over R300 of useless airtime since it can only be used for voice+sms bundles

But this has always been so for prepaid. Why the advert now??

By the way, this was an advert I saw on TV. For ALL contract types. Perhaps they have recalled it.

From time to time they do advertise things that have been in effect for a while to get a greater public education to the matter, ie im still getting Noknok adverts, was launched a while ago.

That is weird, i called one agent at our data hub and just to make sure i called the supervisor there, perhaps they havent been informed of anything to this effect, would be odd if they werent though considering this does sound like a useful service that clients would like to partake in.
Il recheck for you on Tuesday to see if there's any update in the matter:)

I personally think that most contract subscribers with modems and data bundles have prepaid cellphones as having 2 contracts is a bit heavy on the pocket.
My modem contract expires next month. What do I upgrade to? My modem works perfectly well and will carry on using it with prepaid bundles from the cheapest SP.
If I can upgrade to a cellphone with say 500mb's, then I can dump my old prepaid cellphone and carry on with the sim in the modem and have a new cellphone on a prepaid sim.
A win, win both ways.

I only use R10.00 airtime pm but about 500MB's so upgrading to R150.00 airtime contract is a waste.

Hey, i fully agree with what you're saying right there:)
2 things i must point out here thought, im not sure if the first one applies to you but it might so its something to look at:

1) You might be on a discounted package, discount falls away after the 24 month period and you left paying full price on month to month.
2) Its been a while since ive been part of the customer services area of the company so i would probably be the worst person to advise on such things, il check if you can upgrade and take a phone instead of a modem, last time i heard that wasnt possible:(

Il get all my ducks in a row by approaching the various departments tomorrow and give you a call, is that cool?:)

Thanks Snakepit. I have been paying R219.00 +- for E220 plus 350MB's. So I don't think it is discounted.
I have reversed incorrect billings twice so I don't think MTN will have me upgrade.
Thank you anyway.

Ah ok, not too sure on pricing anymore, looks about right though- maybe looking at moving that package to a 500mb, difference in pricing is nominal.

Hi Marco:)

Ok, so ive checked on this, sadly one cannot get an upgrade to a handset on this package, only data cards. Ive asked whether they have something in the pipeline and they have advised nothing to that effect.
On a lighter note though your data contract expires in October, so after that expires you can move it to a contract, something like a topup for instance that will give you airtime and you can load a data bundle over and above that- for instance:

Topup 75- R82.59
extra 350mb bundle- R169

out of bundle at R1.20 comes off the airtime, therefore you get 400mb (and a handset) for R251.59.

Alternatively add an extra R20.00 to that and you get the 500mb bundle with an out of bundle rate of R1.20 per meg.

It is a different direction in which to go and a couple of rands more expensive than a data contract but thats the only thing i can think of given the limitations on each contract choice.

What do you reckon?

Thanks, but I will never use R82.59 airtime pm.
Not near that.
Perhaps a poll on " What internet users need" for upgrades is required as a thread?

MTN could actually "score" by giving the users the option to buy a bundle using the contract rand amount from for example a Anytime350 package. If the user don't use up the bundle and it expires, MTN scores. For us users it will give us a more flexible package. VODACOM does it on their top-up CONTRACTS, why can't MTN not do it????

Its a good idea, il try and get someone from our side to take notice of it.

ps the airtime is in rand value so i t will be converted to out of bundle data charges.
