FYI: The policy enforced by IBurst regarding the cancellation of contracts changed in January 2006. If you want to cancel your contract, they charge you the full subscription remaining for the duration of your contract and no longer only the settlement cost of the modem.

This may or may not be news to some of you, but it sure was for me. I have to fork out 14 monthly G3 payments to cancel my subscription.

If it's in the contract, it's in the contract. But it just seems like a underhanded tactic to keep revenues up. That's my opinion, but I guess I should face up to the reality that business in SA is conducted the African way.

As I understand it, it works that way with the cellular networks too. Standard practice if it is. :(

You signed a contract for a set amount of time. There is nothing wrong with being forced to pay out the balance. It is standard practice in most industries.

Contractually there is nothing wrong. In my opinion though, it is not fair to charge for network access if i'm not going to use it.

If I were a spitefull individual, I could start running torrents and downloading a hard-copy of the Internet.

Ooh, can I have a copy? :D

I also think it is a little unfair, but in most cases a contract comes with certain "extras", like a phone, modem, better prices, whatever. I'm not saying this case - but in most cases. The provider is simply recouping costs.

Aw heck, who am I kidding?

well in that case why cancel the contrack if you have to pay the whole amount ???

i would keep it on 24/7 and leach every torrent possible from the net untill the contract is finished or they send you a termination letter for abuse ...

but to pay that amount of money upfront is insane

what the hell.... how can they expect that? just the other day someone cancelled without having to pay for the remaining months.

here

I agree with those that say they should let you off the hook. After all as some have stated you can keep the service running and use it till the end.

i see this as a tactical move

they are trying to discourage people from just cacelling the contract and go for something better across the fence :( this is a 110% not cool move by iBurst. this WILL change the minds of the current users about the mindset of iBurst.

i smell a cropse is bussy rotting here

This SMACKS of TelScum ... only they would do you in as a client ....

Ed, Edd & Eddy ... go back to your drawing board ... this Move is going to scare current iBurst users away .. !!!!!!!!

Or face the HALL of shame for iBurst

The lady in accounts said that because I joined after the policy change in January, I have to pay the entire subscription.

So in reality, you cannot cancel your subscription. You can only pay for the entire period remaining and then be disconnected. Who would do that?

Rather unfortunate for people living near saturated towers or moving to areas that are not within signal range of a tower.

if they are not serving you with a service then the contract should be NULL and VOID.

or just phone your bank and cancel the debit order .... :p
and if they phone to ask you why you are not paying ... then you say lack of service ... and that will be your ticket out if you have no other option.

I dont see what you guys mean about this leeching the internet. Thats what you are ALLOWED to do on Iburst with the 64kb after cap access.

I know people that do that, they never get a abuse letter or anything..

Why wouldnt you be doing that in the first place if its what you want?

By cancelling the debit order, I will be in breach of contract. I don't plan on going to extremes to get out of this.

If IBurst prefers to do busniness this way, theres not much a lone consumer can do about it.

I just found it a bit strange that they took the hard line on this. Didn't even ask why I was cancelling or if there was anything they could do to keep my custom. Just plainly said that I am free to cancel as soon as I pay them eight thousand odd rand.

yeah i would like to do that but for me @ best of times i only get 64kb downloads when im not capped .... and for some weird reason i get like 4kb when i am capped ....

The moral of the story is

DONT SIGN CONTRACTS

Even if you have to take out a bank loan to pay for the modem,

DONT SIGN CONTRACTS

Do you mean 4KB/s? And from where?

On http downlaods with muti threads, you should get 8KB/s-10KB/s easily. Wat your signal like though, it can also influence the 64kb speeds.

P2P however is dead, except for Soulseek and DC++, maby torrents work too, not shure.

look @ my siganture click the -89db link and you will see in whata *** area i am.

and my download speeds are in general. from download from http and torrents and ftp and playing GuildWars. i dont even bother with P2P even when i am not capped.

So does this mean that people who joined before January do not adhere to this policy? As I understand it lots of people have cancelled recently but only payed for the modem.
