I'm due for upgrade/renewal. Will I be protected by the new CPA if I renew my MTN cellphone contract, despite the initial contract entered into two years ago? Or, do I let this 24 month term lapse, and enter into a totally new contract to be protected by the CPA?

Thnx Guys

if you read the finally CPA it was watered down a lot with regards to cell contracts. Should you wish to cancel in a few months you'll still pay the remainder of the contract.

There is a thread regarding it here somewhere.

Thnx, but i wanna upgrade and the question is, do the terms and conditions of the initial contract remain in force, or do i get protection from the CPA automatically? essentially, with these renewals/upgrades, are they NEW (CPA Protected) contracts, or extension of the existing contract (Not CPA Protected).

I'd LOVE to know the answer to this question.....

i.e. Does the CPA cover you if you renew a contract that was signed before the date of the CPA taking effect, but you renew it after the date?

PS: where is there a thread tha tnicely explains what the CPA means to consumers WRT a cellphone contract? The ones I have found are very wishy washy/vague and ambiguous (possibly because the CPA is).

Cheers guys

I'd imagine that since you aren't signing anything new you would not be covered.

my last upgrade was performed over the phone in June 2009, the initial contract was signed in 2007. My upgrade is due next month and i will need clarity b4 I do this. I would rather wait the contract term out and start again if the CPA don't cover me.

If it helps, I tried to do an early upgrade on my MTN contract (1 month early, so on month 19 instead of 20) and the lady at Retentions told me that due to the CPA they are not allowed to do that. The resulting contract would be too long.

It would be interesting to see if they use CPA to prevent unwanted early upgrades, yet not implement CPA rules once you do upgrade :erm:
