Contract upgrade in May 2011 (Vodacom) - want multitouch+Android

Hi all,

I am due to upgrade my contract in May this year and I was looking for advice.

I initially wanted to go with the X10 mini pro (android), but am somewhat against this, as I want a phone with multitouch support. As I heard, the X10 will get basic multitouch support with the next update, but will this update come to South Africa anytime in the next while?

I am basically looking for a phone with:
Android Operating System
Multitouch
Preferably Sony Ericsson (but open to any other phone)
R350 or less per month (Preferably a Top-Up package like Topup 315 s).

Anybody actually used a good multitouch phone in this range?

Wow... Not a single reply. How about this...

What would you guys suggest with the following specs:
3G
Multitouch
Many FREE Apps available
GPS

I could go with any brand of phone now. Since by myBB responses, I obviously asked for the least popular phone. :(

Why SE out of interest? I'm a former SE fan myself. However I reached the conclusion that HTC is much better when it comes to supporting Android.
 
My contract is up at the end of this month so I have to make a similar decision... The X8 is being released with decent specs in a similar price range to the X10 Mini (Excluding QWERTY keypad) if you favour SE, I am inclined to go with the HTC Wildfire or LG P500 Optimus just coz they have superior battery life. But thus far my best mobile phone experience has definitely be with SE...
 
Vodacom offer Desire HD on businesscall for R279/month.That would be my suggestion,it has built-in multitouch,and will have all the latest Android updates.Gingerbread is already out for it.Sony ericsson are not sure if they will even update as far as gingerbread.The X10 does not have a built-in fm radio,lcd is smaller and lookes less attractive as Htc desire HD.
 
As awesome as the DHD is, the LCD is actualy not as good as X10's, even GSMArena said so in their Screen Tech article/review, the DHD owns it most other things though, and at R279pm its an absolute bargain.
By the way the guys at XDA have ported the Arc's 2.3.2 Gingerbread ROM to X10, its still early days but should be fully functional in the next month or so. ;)

So sorry i didn't see this thread earlier.

I am due for an upgrade in May as well and also want to jump to this phone.

Im coming from a nokia 5800 xpress with a whopping 3.2' screen.

The size of the X10 mini pro's screen is a little small, and this is my only concern with the phone.

Would it help if i told you it won the European phone of the year 2010 ?

EDIT:this phone is available on an MTN Anytime 100 contract for R100 so it puts this phone in a special league when you consider anything else in a similar price range.

I would recommend porting over to red bull mobile. At your price range the hd is exactly the right phone and price.

phaktza: Why SE? Well... I've had SE for 2 out of 3 of my most recent phones. The latest was an HTC Snap (which was nowhere near what I wanted. I really should have gone the BB route instead).

ET!: I've just had a look. I have a SE W995 at the moment and the X8 has a 3MP camera. I need at least 5 otherwise I'd end up needing a secondary phone for pictures.

peter34: Desire at that price isn't worth it. I would rather go for Pavan and Shayd's suggestions of RBM. Only thing is... has anybody had any experience with this phone in South Africa?

demon angel: I might just go for the x10 mini pro. Small screen and all. the screen size is exactly like my SE W995 and I have no issues with that one. With the added qwerty keyboard, I think I should manage. I saw it on the MTN Anytime 100. I will get it on the MTN topup100 package with R100 airtime and 25 free SMSes per month (with a R100 payin and R99 per month). This should let me control my airtime spending per month. In addition, MTN gives you loyalty points on contract, whereby Vodacom does not (I spend in access of R1000 for airtime per month at times and with vodacom not playing fair, I lost out on a lot).

I'm in a similar boat to you there djEJ! Would like an android smart-phone, but the Desire HD is far from free on the 315 top-up! The Business Call @ 279pm, what extra costs are expected there, surely data could be seperate and it will end up being substantially more than a top-up type contract? What other decent contracts are available for the DHD? Is Cell C as good as Vodacom and MTN WRT signal, dropped calls etc etc?

Why go DHD when you can go Samsung Galaxy S?

MTN Anytime100 (or Topup Anytime 100). No pay-in. +25 SMSes per month. For R250 per month. This looks like my favorite option. I'm a battery life freak... so look at this:

Featurewise, the DHD has a better camera (with flash), better internet speeds (who's gonna use the higher speeds before their contract runs out at current bandwidth prices) and that's it.
The Galaxy has a way better battery life (7+ hours video play at gsmarena), better features other than those mentioned above, 30fps recording (DHD I'm not sure of, it could be the same).

What would you choose?

I diod also start my own thread but was a touch hurried on responses. I think I've decided to actually go for the motorola defy as it will hopefully last me the full 24 months (which will be a first for me) and it isnt a terrible phone from what I've read/heard (not quite a SGS or DHD, but will do fine for me I think), I am open to being convinced otherwise but doubt I'll change my mind now.
Now the question is VC or MTN: I can get the Defy on my current 315 top-up without paying in, but - get this - on MTN its available on the 139 top-up! I dont use all of my 315 a month (maybe that will change with an android phone and using more data), maybe it will be beneficial to go with MTN (although I'll have to wait an extra week for a phone) but I see their call charges are a significantly higher. EISH - too much of thinking to do!

At this stage I'd actually wait till next month when the HTC Incredible S comes out. It has very good specs and will have better software and longevity for software upgrades.

Only thing is if you're waiting for a new phone to be released there's always a better one coming out next month. Also, the Incredible is probably going to be priced pretty steeply.

You do know there is a new x10 mini due for release?

Running Gingerbread out of the box, 1Ghz CPU, 512MB RAM, 5MP camera....well, I would not be happy if I buy the old mini and the new one is out in a month's time.

Hang in there for the HTC sensation. There is also the Nexus S to consider.
