Contracting Cold Sores

The cold sores on your mouth are HSV-1, although HSV-2 can also break out on your mouth. HSV-2 just prefers the pubic area. They are both part of the same family and almost identical, so people saying ewww to genital herpes but cold sores are "ok" are idiots. If you have herpes, you have herpes.

If you're worried, OP, just get some tests done at the doc. They draw blood and send it off. Just make sure you get the newer IgG test, as it's more accurate and can actually tell you which type of HSV you have.

not worried - she hasnt had an outbreak yet - just not going near her when she does ^_^

herpes simplex virus (type 1) causes cold sores and herpes simplex virus (type 2) is the STD. On that note both can cause mouth sores. Dont touch her till it goes away, if its type 1 its self limiting if it doesnt go away get a test :P

Oh and saying when you get older you can transmit it is utter rubbish

Also, saliva is the external carrier so don't drink from the same cups, don't share cutlery.... basically don't touch her or anything she touches :D If you are worried about that, you can use 10% bleach to sterilise surfaces like bathroom sinks and kitchen countertops. In the end, if you get infected the viral DNA will remain forever in your neural ganglia (mostly in the spine). Forever. :O
