Well, before i even ask.. I guess security comes first. But in IT, should it matter? I have few friends who prefer contracts... Personally I've never thought i would consider but since i have an interview next week, which is for a fixed 12months contract, i might go for it. What should be the factors influencing such decisions? Pension fund and medical-aid are two of the most critical things to manage i think....

In this economical climate I'd go for a permanent position. They are busy laying off people here at work and contractors are the first to go.

Personally I manage my medical aid and pension fund myself. This keeps me independant from company stuff. Even though it helps, its not worth the trouble when you do leave.

a 12 month contract is perfect, just read the terms fo termination very carefully before signing anything.

Contract work pays a lot more than normal job. If you're willing to take the risk you can earn some big bucks.

I'm busy contracting out. If you do a good job the contract will always be extended. Mine is looking to extend to August now. Which isn't bad.

EtienneK may be right about the laying off bit, but it all depends what company/where/when etc you're working on.

mhhh  wish me good luck for tuesday :)

I've been contracting to the same company for the past 4 years now - 12 months at a time. It depends on the company and job, I suppose.

Contracting has a distinct advantage in development circles - my time is mine. Check your contract, but in permanent positions normally you are owned. In a contract position I can do my own thing after hours, and own the code.
