Hi, I have 5 PC's hardwired to an ADSL connection (4 Mbps) and about 20 employees. Each employee has his own password to logon to one of internet PCs. I need to limit the time employees spend on the internet, some spend all day!. What I want to do is limit each employee to a set number of hours per day. When thay enter their password to log onto a PC the programme must recognise the password and if more than allocated has been used deny access to the Internet. Any one know of appropriate software.

You might want to look at setting up a box with something called PublicIP (http://www.publicip.net) to control your guests access. It's a pretty good open source solution specifically for people who want to set up wifi hotspots. It's pretty configurable so you could have users register for access, or hand out passwords from your front desk. It'll also let you block things like p2p and other bandwidth black holes should you feel you need to.

Dont know if this will help, but maybe you can go from there.

Maybe put an IPcop box between your ADSL router and your switch? IPCop has tons of plugins for their proxy (squid) and I'm sure I've seen scheduling of users accounts.

I've always found that a reminder of the relationship between getting work done and having a job is pretty effective.:D

what about installing windows server addition...? I dnt have much knowledge but i'm sure u can set user group rights..? can any1 confirm this?

Do you employ children ... so why not address the issue i.r.o Internet usage with them instead of using old south african management techniques dating back from the Ark ???.

We don't monitor internet usage except using Websense to filter the unacceptable sites and shape the WAN for business traffic but we expect employees to be adult about it and make sure their work is completed.

Yeah I hear what you say. I find that some employees are spending so much time on Internet that normal work is sufferring. I don't want to prohibit everyone only those that abuse privilege ie do not complete normal work. yes perhaps they are kids!

No Not All but its a facility thats available to speed client services that is being abused. I need to punish the guilty by limiting their time online but allow innocent to pursue their interests. I can cut access for all but feel that is unfair, also allowing them to use internet is somewhat of a social investment as they are improving life skills!

Try CCProxy by YoungZSoft. You can limit internet usage to certain times as you specify on a per user basis. It uses ip address and / or username. You just have to point each client to the ip address of the proxy pc.
