I doubt it would cost many jobs, if any, they're talking about moving the resources off of those power stations and onto others.

Maybe some coal miners lose jobs as their mine no longer has a power station next to it...
Well without jobs then the business case is somewhat diminished, I assume the top management structure would have to be let go at least and that's not an insignificant saving. The operational and CAPEX budget savings would also be useful.

Switch off old underperforming ESKOM employees
Include the new ones in that statement too please.
And those who's just there because the ANC thinks they're too useless to get another job.

I think this is great plan, but it simply won't work since our guava mint has no intention of fixing a problem they can use to control & extort people with.

Commie handbook 101: there always have to be a crisis.

So what they are actually saying is we need more power plants?

But as previous poster stated above, even though they are unreliable they are generating electricity, we are not working with the most honest, qualified bunch here. There is no garuntee that the money will optimally used let alone not simply stolen via one or another scheme.

What remains is the capacity must be increased. Shutting these units down puts pressure on the government to expedite.

Unreliable, problematic, but still producing power.

Cutting them off will ensure permanent Stage 1 or Stage 2... which do you prefer?

The problem is we have people like Gweezy who are protecting their little powerbase and retirement fund at all costs and thus have a very narrow and myopic view on things.

"We can't lose 100000 jobs in the mining sector, so Eskom MUST keep all the stations running and not be allowed to move to better and cheaper power sources"
When the reality is that a stable power supply in the country will very quickly see those 100000 jobs recreated in other sectors, and even the move to other power sources would see much of the workforce who theoretically "lost" their jobs, being absorbed in other areas.

But of course that requires thinking beyond tomorrow and the votes a decision may or may not cost you in the next internal election cycle or at the national polls in 2024.

Only problem with this is that the new plants are also majorly underperforming.... now what's left turned on?

IPP’s must build new base load generation capacity the government procures through transmission.

This article is like being told you need to get rid of your beat up old jalopy that breaks down half way to work when you can't afford to replace it.

If your old jalopy also causes issues with other cars in the highway by breaking down and they crash into you :(
Sadly these are being run well beyond their attended lifespan and were only brought out of mothballs about 12 years ago

Oh without a doubt they are long overdue for replacement, but realistically speaking unless we can find that 13%/4000MW elsewhere we sort of have to live with the risk of being "crashed into"
