Controversial suggestion from Linden SAPS

So what do you guys make of this?

Linden SAPS Advises
All residents please make sure that your domestic workers and gardeners are all vetted and checked. They should at least undergo a police clearance every 6 – 12 months. That means that their fingerprints needs to be taken at the police station during office hours 07:30 – 15:30 Mondays to Fridays. Their fingerprints will then be sent to Pretoria and a police clearance certificate will be issued. The cost is r 96-00 and waiting period is ± 6-8 weeks. There are private companies specialising in this however it costs more, but the results are known much quicker.
Please take note that in terms of the immigration act 13 of 2002 sect 38(1) – no person shall employ an illegal foreigner or a foreigner whose status does not authorise him or her to be employed. Sect 38(2) – an employer shall make a good faith effort to ascertain that no illegal foreigners are employed by him or her and to ascertain the status or citizenship of those whom he or she employs.
Please ensure that you keep copies of all documents (id, passport and proof of residential address) pertaining your domestic workers and gardeners on file and do proper background checks before you employ somebody.
 
Perhaps some sense of peace of mind but I feel sorry for the innocent worker who happened to touch a door or window shortly before something happened to the employer.
 
I can just imagine the conversation with the staff who've been working for me for years. "Sorry, the police say we gotta take you to have fingerprints taken. Every 6 months".

Talk about making them feel like criminals.

Yeah I wouldn't do this to my current employees, nor would I take them back every 6 months either.
 
This when there is an big ongoing dispute in Worcester due to the dompas they had implemented which are still under investigation.

The same points which are currently being looked at, something is not right here... or they may do what they want. Is this approved by the community board and SAPS?

It was happening in another area too if I remember correctly. This idea should be dropped.
 
Some of those Police stations are still decent (Linden, Fairlands, etc.). If you live near Brixton, Sophiatown, etc. don't even bother. I tried to get myself a police clearance certificate and gave up due to the shear incompetence and unwillingness to do their jobs at these stations!
 
It has also been strongly suggested by Pankhurst's DA councillor.

No way I put my maid through this, especially every 6 months.

Before hiring a contractor, you should basically 2 months to be able to start the works ? Convenient (and two months is nice, last time I asked mine, they lost it and it took close to 6 months in the end and had to pay twice the 96 rands...).

The comms originates from SAPS.
 
I think it's a good idea. There's jobs out there that require you to be vetted regularly. If you want a piece of mind then go ahead and do it.

If you don't want to do it, don't.

I think if it's something you agree UP FRONT with your employees, that's fine... but I don't think in all fairness you can start enforcing it on existing ones.
 
I think it is just a suggestion. Really should only be for new employees.

You only need a Police Clearance Certificate for confirmation of your

- criminal status,
- emigration or
- working abroad.

It is only required when you need to meet

- court requirements,
- residence permission or
- securing employment.

In this case this has more to do with foreign employment.
