Because of perceptions.
This will feed a perception that "madam" doesn't trust her domestic...
You and I understand the need for police clearance for certain jobs, but "I've been working for you 3 years, we've never had a problem, now you want to take me to the police like a criminal to be fingerprinted".

This will cause major issues, and I can't help wondering if it's something the ANC's suggesting via the police to foster discord.

There should be little to no issue to put foreigners through the process, it is once you have to process the South African citizens where things may run amok. Foreigners need to understand why they are vetted, this is the responsibility of our South African Diplomatic and Consular Representatives abroad. Everyone should be vetted with their first employment...

I'm only under the impression that there will be issues whilst the Worcester case is ongoing, and it is also under investigation by our SAHRC and by the OHCHR. It was not only the green card which was the issue, but also extortion in regard with being forced to pay for the service.

makes no sense at all. 1st when last did you hear of the police taking finger prints after a break in, you can consider yourself lucky if the even pitch up. 2nd this should really be done before you employ someone, are you really going to wait 6-8 weeks to offer a domestic a postion.

Are you an employee? Surely your boss should require you to undergo a police clearance every 6 – 12 months as well?

Every time I move jobs within my existing company, I have to go through background checks and police clearance, including having fingerprints done a few years back. Why should it be different for unskilled labour?? Finger prints help catch criminals, that's a fact.

You only need a Police Clearance Certificate for confirmation of your

- criminal status,
- emigration or
- working abroad.

It is only required when you need to meet

- court requirements,
- residence permission or
- securing employment.

In this case this has more to do with foreign employment.

I am a foreigner, so I have to do one each time I renew my visa, I know this and this is why I say the proposal of SAPS is stupid, who will take 2 months before hiring a contractor to check his criminal record ? Or wait 2 months before hiring your maid because you wait for the result ?

Well in financial services I think there regulatory requirements to be met to prevent money laundering etc etc

Personally I prefer working where I know people have been cleared so I don't end up working with criminals - just look at what position the sabc is in - even their top knob is a criminal!
