I have never been a mobile junkie. Mobiles have always been an instrument solely to receive and make calls/emails when outdoors. I have no real need for extensive communication over any social or other channel. Nor am I obsessed with games (apart from Sudoku).

So I have a basic phone - SE Xperia X10 mini.

Convert - Guide me as to how I can use this phone to it's maximum capacity. What do I install first? What apps will greatly enhance my life? And how do I download and install apps from my PC versus having to download them on the mobile directly? In other words - make me a mobile junkie.

I was the same many moons ago. slowly but surely the cellphone "lifestyle" has drawn me in and I am now dependent on it for email, phone numbers, banking in urgent situations, etc... So a cellphone with features is now important to me, alltough I still dont "trust" them in the sence that we are sitting on a ticking bomb as far as illness and cell towers & phones are concerned...

Keep it the way you are - why change and add another depenancy in your life. My "conversion" was not really by choice but really more work related as they bought in more technology and wanted us to be more easily available to clients.

My 10c worth for this public holiday... enjoy!

I'll second Bosvark's post in if you dont need it dont change.

Sure people like me are beyond help, I can not imagine my life without a smartphone, but then I travel a lot as well.

From checking exchange rates to seeing what time it is someplace in the world before I call my friends, playing games, listening to music and all. Hell right now I am reading this forum from my (Tablet)

If you did not find a need for an application then dont go looking, well that is unless you not aware of everything that they can do, and just would like to know what functionality is out there.

You are right regarding - "creating dependency" .. I have even heard people lament over lack of connectivity etc over dinner at restaurants...

oh btw Jennifer please can I have your number... :)

Sure: my details below:
PS.
If you want to request an autograph, follow the guidelines bellow. If you just want to mail a letter with the address above, and do not want anything back, then you can stop reading! If you live in USA send a properly stamped and self addressed envelope (minimum size 8.5" x 4") with your request letter and a photo. You can include a piece of cardboard to keep the photo from bending in shipping and also add "Do Not Bend" on the envelopes. Send your letter and wait. On average, there is going to be a 3+ month wait for a response

Address Information:

1100 Glendon Ave
Suite 920
Los Angeles, CA 90024
USA
Phone: (310) 943-6600
Fax: (310) 943-6609

Anything that you have to carry with you ALL the time for the next two years warrants investment.

I agree with "Bosvark" & "Elimentals" just keep using your phone the way you are doing it now. At the end of the day who needs to be playing "Angry Birds" when you could be doing something constructive?

I think all kinda forgot why we needed a mobile phone to begin with. It's not an extension of oneself but a tool to keep in touch with loved ones and for emergencies.

Hi J-Lo, I've the same phone and am also fighting the urge to create another dependency, so my philosophy is that once I'm away from my PC, no more interwebz!

I will remember you in my prayers...for your salvation from the evil smartphone

Jen, I normally use my bf's phone so that I can check my e-mails and go on facebook when I am bored. Not that I do it at home - I prefer my PC tons but when I'm out with him and I'm sitting by myself or when we are out and having an argument about something that no one really knows, I use his phone to google for facts and then show everyone the truth from it.

I remember the one day, somehow I didn't have internet for the day and we had a heavy discussion in the house with some friends on which was the biggest cargo plane in the world - so I googled it and got the answer cos this friend thought the one in SA was the biggest and I said no, Wikipedia say this plane in the US was the biggest one. I can't remember which one it is now.

So cellphone with java, internet and wap can be useful in situations like mine.

EDIT: The reason why I use his phone is cos I don't have a phone that supports internet - only sms and phone calls. Once I get a new phone, I'll probably get a sony ericsson or blackberry - depends on when I have made up my mind.

That's not a "basic phone". More of a mini smartphone.

Other stuff you can do with it:
Google Maps, included on the phone. No need for a paper map.
You might want to install a GPS Navigation app too or get a hacked version of Google Maps where the navigation works in SA.

To install apps using a PC, go to https://market.android.com/
When you click to install an app there it will automatically be sent to and installed on your phone.

Instant messaging is cheaper than SMS. Imo is a great IM app.
There's also Whatapp which is a BBM type thing where you can message other Whatsapp users. Try it and it will show you if any of your phone contacts are using it.

You can use Google Reader to read any news feeds you have added to your Google Reader account. Great way to keep up with the news on the go.
You can use either the mobile site or install the Google Reader app. The mobile site is better if you ask me.

First things first - is it running 2.1? Because if it's still running 1.6 the first thing you should do is upgrade to Android 2.1.

Good philosophy. I wonder what the reaction would be if due to "earth/green" issues there was legislation that banned the use of communication devices for a period of time everyday?

The google map thing sounds interesting. I had a garmin but my car was broken into and it was taken.
Thanks for the tip re. the PC installation.

My x10 mini was stolen :( so I now have a Samsung Galaxy S i9000 :)

There are tonnes of budget apps, task list apps, games etc... I even read these forums sometimes on the phone :)

First thing is first though, if you use data then download a small button widget thing to turn it off and on with ease :)

Otherwise if you have wi-fi in your house then just leave data off completely :p data is too darn expensive unless you buy bundles.
