Trying to upgrade to version 2.1.

Error message= "Unable to install or start some components" - 3 times.
Googled - tried all tips - installed new version of PC companion, disabled security and firewall etc etc etc
Found a link to download the upgrade exe file on: http://talk.sonyericsson.com/thread/7947
Is this legit, will I brick phone - any advice?

Well its from Sony Ericsson so I would go yes on legit question.
On the brick question I highly doubt the would give you something that is not fool proved so bricking phone is highly unlikely. The bonus part is that is official so if anything goes wrong you used one of their tools so will not void your warranty.

So I get onto https://market.android.com on my PC.
Select an APP that I want to install.
Notification on the site says installed.
But there is nothing on my phone.

There was no problem with compatibility etc etc. I googled but got nowhere. Suggestions?

Depends on your Phones connection, sometimes it takes a while before the download kicks in. I have noticed that installing new apps lately is taking longer and longer to authorize esp when you pay. My guess is its linked to the load. 400 000 new phones a day must place some nice strain on Google's Auth servers.

Also make sure you have Background Sync enabled in Accounts & Sync in Settings for gmail account as well as Automatic updates.

Thanks. Must my gmail account be logged-in on the phone as well?

If so how do I log-out after I'm done. When I hit the MENU key that shows all running apps - there is no option to log off.

No. You log into Google Account(Gmail) when you set up the phone 1st time. this creates a Gmail section in your Accounts & Sync.
All you have to do is make sure it syncs it will do the rest from there. Note, most people turn off the Auto and background sync to preserve data use, if you one of them installing apps from a PC will take a lot longer and sometimes need you to open the Android Market app on the phone.

No need to log off.
