I first sent this as an email to a friend of mine. However it would be interesting to see what everyone else has to say.

After spending hours reading forums, blogs, wiki's, faqs etc I decided I would rather ask someone who OS's Opensuse.

I am not a newbie or clueless when it comes to Linux. However I have gotten so used to the Ubuntu *throws up on 9.10*/Debian way of doing things that I have lost touch with alternatives such as Opensuse, Mandriva and Fedora.

My current PC setup is as follows:

Desktop:

Windows 7 x64 Ultimate (running in trial mode)
2x250GB Hard Drives. Both drives formatted with NTFS

Server:

Windows 7 x64 Ultimate

1x160GB Hard Drive
1x500GB Hard Drive. Both drives formatted with NTFS

Laptop:

Lenovo N200

Windows 7 Ultimate
1x160GB Hard Drive. With three partitions and all formatted with NTFS.

I want to be able to do the following:

1) Install Opensuse KDE on the Desktop and Server.
2) Install Opensuse Gnome on the Laptop.
3) Mount and share the partitions in both the Desktop and Server. Using Samba as then my Fiance' can also access shared files with her laptop when needed.
4) All the PC's must be able to access the shares no matter if they are booted up in Linux or Windows.
5) I want the server to be able to do PPOE connections preferably through GUI if not then command line is fine.

My main issue has been networking with regards to using Ubuntu, for the life of me. When booted in Windows the machines could see the files shared on the Linux box's but when booted in Linux Ubuntu refused to see them. Not even NFS helped.

Yeah I'm also thinking of switching. karmic has been a bit of a disappointment, great new features but still buggy.

Although might just try to get Fedora 12 first

OpenSUSE shines when it comes to the workplace. For example, at work we use Active Directory, and it really sucks that I have to everytime type in my password everywhere, where as on windows it automatically uses your current logged in user.

Untill I got to opensuse where AD is supported out of the box, giving the same ease the windows users have.

Ok so that does not answer your question. To make a share on OpenSUSE, is as easy as in Windows. To access a share is almost as easy in windows, but I found at times I can not just browse the network, but in gnome, or nautilus you can just use smb://x.x.x.x or sometimes if you lucky smb://pc-name will work from where on you can browse the shares normally.

Networking is a breeze and can be done via network manager on gnome, not sure about kde.

Good luck.

Karmic is a huge disappointment.

Also feel like trying a new distro.

Was also a bit unhappy with Karmic for the first week or so. I've ironed out my issues now and I'm quite happy. Installed the new OpenSuse the other day on a spare drive and wasn't overly impressed (I must say it has some nice GUI features that Ubuntu doesn't have - e.g. X11 config tool), but I can do that stuff through the terminal anyways.

I'm quite happy with Karmic for now, but looking forward to the 10.04 release.

Anyway, this has gone a bit off topic - where were we?

I''m sticking to the LTS versions of Ubuntu from now on (Hardy is still great).

Not sure what distro is best for me... it has to have local repos and mythtv should be easy to install.
