Hi
My Customers laptop does not want to charge anymore so we need to send it to the warranty centre.
I wanted to create a virtual PC for him from his hard drive so he can work on another pc for the time .

I put his drive in as a slave on my pc then used http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/ee656415.aspx to create a VHD, I created a new virtual pc and selected the VHD When it boots up I get a err1err3

Any ideas on how to fix or another way
Thanks

Silly question, what VM software are you trying to boot the image from?

Images created using Disk2vhd will only work on Microsoft Virtual PC or Microsoft Hyper-V. I've used VMWare's Converter http://www.vmware.com/products/converter/ to successfully migrate a physical PC to a virtual machine and it ran very well using VMWare's free Server edition.

Virtualbox also have an EXCELLENT guide to converting from physical to Virtual image.

The disk2vhd usually works nicely (migrated a few physical servers to virtual). During the boot of the virtual, [F8] disable the automatic reboot option (a.k.a I didn't see a BSOD). If you get a Stop 0x7B error, then somewhere the machine is lacking the IDE registry settings /drivers. Additionally, when you ran the Disk2vhd, did you select the HAL modification option (good idea if going from a dual-core + / HT machine)

The err1err3 issue seems to be a common HP thing. (google?)

I think the problem is because i cant boot the laptop and then run disk2vhd.

You could always use Acronis Backup & Recovery (used to be called True Image) to image the disk and convert it to a virtual disk. Supports VMware Workstation, Microsoft Virtual PC, Parallels Workstation or Citrix XenServer virtual appliance. Great tool.
