Converting an mp3 to dolby 5.1?

Hey everyone :)

I really want to make use of my optical port with my z5500 but obviously most of my mp3 are all stereo and so it kind of sucks playing it through the optical port so I would like to know if anyone can maybe explain how I can convert these mp3's to a dolby 5.1 format for my speakers to play (i know you cant convert it to a full 5.1 song but anything close would be nice :) )

In windows set the number of speakers you have to 5.1 . Would help if everyone else knew what windows version and sound card you have?

In Linux I just set it to surround.5.1 and all mp3s are up-mixed and the bass channel has a cut off frequency to automatically route the audio to the best speaker.
 
Thats not what I mean, am on Windows XP SP2 but like when I plug in the optical cable and play a song, my speakers give me the options of Stereo,Stereo x2,PL2 Movie,PL2 Music but if the source/song is encoded in DTS 5.1(in vista you can do a test and it plays a DTS source) then it comes up as DTS digital on my speakers and that is what I want....
 
You can't convert a 2 channel stereo source to 6 channels (5.1).

Your receiver most likely has a DTS NEO6/Dolby Pro-Logic II chip built in that can emulate 6 channel output from a stereo source, so set it to NEO6 or Pro-Logic II.

Try to stay away from setting Windows speakers to 4 or 5.1. Leave it on 2 speakers and let the external receiver to the surround mixing.

If your source is Dobly Digital 5.1 or DTS, the receiver should automatically switch to the appropriate decoding format as your digital out from the card sends raw data to your receiver which in turn switches to the appropriate decoding module.

I had the same problem in Linux, when I played stereo mp3s, it was solved by setting the sound device as surround 5.1
 
What you should do is just download DTS songs. I have around 20 DTS Audio dvds. Need real professionals to convert the standard stereo songs to DTS and DTS-ES

Note: you will only get DTS and DTS-ES if you have optical and your amplifier is able to decode it.
