Cool things invented in SA

South Africa is lagging behind many countries in relation to Internet access and technology, but despite the challenges we brought the world many cool innovations

That is a depressing list.
That South Africans find our pitiful contribution to the worlds inventions worthy of boasting is sad

Really good inventions each one of them. We also led the way in the development of prepaid.

I suspect there are about 100x more great inventions that didn't get the support they needed or they would have also gone big. There are dozens more ideas which are taken offshore to ensure their development. I also suspect there are thousands of exciting ideas right now just waiting to be developed and commercialised.

Most of those inventions were from last century, when our basic education was top notch.

I don't think South Africa invented corruption but we certainly perfected it.

Lol I was actually enjoying the article until Mxit popped up.

It could possibly be depressing, depending on you outlook on life, IF it were an exhaustive list of South African inventions, but it is just a small sample this specific journalist could think of for the article (and seems to have been lifted mostly from this article, or the same source: http://www.popularmechanics.co.za/features/great-south-african-inventions/). If it's the number that depresses you, there are many more, and if it's the quality of innovation, there are much more innovative examples. I'll name a few:

- RSA-3 rocket : South Africa successfully (and independently) developed a 3 stage rocket capable of putting a payload of hundreds of kilograms into orbit. (http://www.astronautix.com/lvs/rsa3.htm)
- SumbandilaSat : Earth observation satellite, independently developed, built and operated by South African engineers. On par with (even better than in most cases) similar international satellites at a much smaller cost. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SumbandilaSat)
- One of the inventors of the CT scanner (Allan Cormack) was South African
- Sasol were the first to get oil from coal

There are many, MANY more examples.

Remember, attitude is a choice you make, and it affects your whole life. Try a positive outlook on life, and see how much happier it makes you in general.

So where can I buy some of those cheap solar cells locally? I know it's manufactured by the Germans.. but surely somebody imports?

Cheaper solar power, I wish!!! It was developed here and then sold to the Germans, too date I've heard nothing about it again, it was suppose to be cheaper, specially in our country! but nothing is being done with it, well it seems! I would exclude this from the article, seeing that nothing is happening about it. And this was about 2 or 3 years ago already?.....
