That is a depressing list.
That South Africans find our pitiful contribution to the worlds inventions worthy of boasting is sad
It could possibly be depressing, depending on you outlook on life, IF it were an exhaustive list of South African inventions, but it is just a small sample this specific journalist could think of for the article (and seems to have been lifted mostly from this article, or the same source:
http://www.popularmechanics.co.za/features/great-south-african-inventions/). If it's the number that depresses you, there are many more, and if it's the quality of innovation, there are much more innovative examples. I'll name a few:
- RSA-3 rocket : South Africa successfully (and independently) developed a 3 stage rocket capable of putting a payload of hundreds of kilograms into orbit. (

- SumbandilaSat : Earth observation satellite, independently developed, built and operated by South African engineers. On par with (even better than in most cases) similar international satellites at a much smaller cost. (

- One of the inventors of the CT scanner (Allan Cormack) was South African
- Sasol were the first to get oil from coal
There are many, MANY more examples.
Remember, attitude is a choice you make, and it affects your whole life. Try a positive outlook on life, and see how much happier it makes you in general.
