There are thousands of applications to choose from with Ubuntu and some of them are infinitely better than their distant Microsoft cousins. Which ones do you really like or find useful or cool.

Compiz-fusion: It allows the kubuntu desktop to look better than anything Vista can throw up. Its the application that no one really needs, but everyone really really wants. It gives your desktop bling.

k9copy: A really useful application for ripping DVDs. I tested it last night... I turned my Soldier of God DVD (which was 7GB) into a 400mb avi... and to be honest, the quality is really good. What made this application so cool is that its really simple to use. (Thanks moederloos)

Alien Arena: A cool quake 3 style game

Tremulous: This game reminds me a lot of "Aliens vs Predator". Really fun game.

Frozen Bubble: One of those almost mindless addictive games you just cant stop playing.

What have you come across?

I was so proud the other day when my gf asked me if she can dual boot linux and windows, and when I asked her why she said so that she can play Frozen Bubble.

anyways so I set up her email and msn also and i'm pretty sure before long she won't boot into windows anymore. muhahahahahhaha

I guess Frozen Bubble is as good a reason to convert as anything else ... ;)

Amarok.

I laugh at these itunes people who have to do all kinds of weird stuff to get their album covers. I love that it automatically provides the lyrics and wikipedia entry for the current artist, and so on.

let it be said that all the programs mentioned here are universal across all linux distros i have used. not just ubuntu.

Isn't Amarok made for KDE? How well does it run on Ubuntu (Gnome)? I only managed to play with it for a few minutes on Ubuntu...

If you are using KDE then something like Baghira would be cool - its a mac osx theme thats good enough to even fool mac enthusiasts.

Atm im using PcLinuxOS2007 - finding it better/more stable for me than Kubuntu, just a pity theres 0 64 bit version - although I like Ubuntu just not the fact thats its GNOME :P

Anyone care to explain to me why I would take Dolphin over Konqueror?

Thanks
J

One thing that drives me nuts about Amarok is that I cant figure out how to play an album by clicking it - have to make a freaking playlist for everything you want to play ...really annoying and I cant believe that this is how the app was written, I must be missing something...?

ftp.leg.ac.za - atleast I got mine there , but im switching back to Ubuntu , pclinux got alot of press recently but its dying, its based off mandrake and some others and is a dying distro - alot of stuff isnt being updated in repos etc so I am going back to ubuntu.

This is good to know.

I'll probably try Kubuntu then, seems KDE is more preferred.

I will probably go back to Ubuntu - although I dont like GNOME - or I might just install my kunbuntu 7.10 and see what I think , wasnt too impressed with it in 7.04 liked its ubuntu counterpart more - so I guess I will just try Kubuntu once more - if not Ubuntu goes on (only reason im not going Ubuntu first is I would have to download it :(... )

Err, I think you are missing something. In the Collection sidebar just double click the album, or drag anything you want to play into the main window.

also one off the menu items in Amarok is Play Audio CD. Will give the full path once I get home this evening.

err... I could swear I tried that numerous times but ended up having to drag everything across which is what I was complaining about.

Rhythmbox is doing just fine for now - copy to iPod quick and easy and never fails to update the database; new albums are updated in the index immediately which is something I have not experienced on PC or Mac so I'm pretty happy with that .

just started using MIRO.

that along with tvrss.net to create some custom feeds for MIRO and I have some automatic bittorrent downloading going straight from my media player:-) handy to keep up with those US episodes we all love.
