Cool ubuntu programs and functions

telkom denies us the joys of being able to use services like miro effectively. which is very sad.

How does ubuntu work guys?

Will I still be able to actually use my current word docs and all other docs?

(Thank the lord) I don't often have to work with those formats, but I believe there isn't a problem with moving them into OpenOffice, unless your spreadsheet has complicated macros. In general, if you've used the new .docx, .xlsx or .pptx, you're going to struggle. So much for an ISO standard

The ISO standards could not handle all of the bloat;)
Since most people still use older versions of MS office this should not be a problem, and as for the docX files I suppose a converter will be available soon enough.

Cheers

Isn't Amarok made for KDE? How well does it run on Ubuntu (Gnome)? I only managed to play with it for a few minutes on Ubuntu...

Works 100% in Ubuntu. And I have a massive collection (160gigs+) imported from a mounted NTFS drive. So yeah!

Yeah you can. Those goddamn .docx files are annoying since I dual boot with Vista/Office2007, I now have to choose the Save As Office 97 - 2003 option when I save docs I've been working on in Vista. A pain, but not the end of days.

Well, like with anything FOSS, people at OOo have an extension to read these damn docx files. Here is the link on how to in Ubuntu Gutsy http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Gutsy#OpenOffice_add_ons

On this site there hundreds of HOWTO's, so enjoy!

I wasn't aware of that. Thank you. :)
