Anyone know how to copy avi's etc files to a HDD drive. I have a Sony HDD recorder and want to copy the files from the DVD to the HDD. App you can copy jpeg's but how do you copy the other stuff?

Howzit dude!
You can copy in numerous ways, depending on what your recorder is capable of ito connections. If it has a USB connection, try using an external drive. Failing that, use DVDRW's. It'll take longer but will have the desired effect. Also, check what file system your recorder uses. I tried plugging my recorder's hdd into my box once and couldn't see the partition. Some of them use freaky file systems. Hope this helps.

My LG HDD Recorder allows me to copy DVD's / AVI's from DVD disc to the HDD on the recorder, via an option in the main menu - something like "copy DVD to HDD".

What model is your Sony?

From what I can remember with mine, I had to register for the DivX before the option opened to me on the menu - you have to log onto http://www.divx.com/vod and obtain a registration code for your recorder. Is on page 126 of the user manual.

Page 78 of the usermanual covers getting files from DVD/CD to HDD - section titled "Dubbing HDD <--> DVD".
It takes a while, depending on the speed of your recorder - I usually just burn the files to DVD-RW on my PC and play them in the recorder - when copying from DVD to HDD, it's not as simple as copying on a PC.

I'll have a full read of the manual later and advise further...

howardb it seems the Sony does not have the option to copy to HDD.
