Vanderbijlpark - Inspector Peter Smit, 38, was one of many police officers deployed to Boipatong in the Vaal Triangle area after rioting broke out at about 05:00 on Monday.

Later that morning, he and Constable Stefan van den Berg, 31, climbed out of a police vehicle while colleagues were shooting rubber bullets at the stone-throwing protesters.

"While the others were throwing stones, I saw a group standing to one side begging us not to shoot them," said Smit.

"What's all this about? Why are you so angry?" he asked them.

Service delivery

The protesters angrily ranted at Smit about poor service delivery. He invited them to call the other protesters to where they were standing. A crowd of about 500 started following him calmly after he promised them the police wouldn't shoot at them if they walked with him and didn't throw stones.

He then walked at the front of their peaceful march.

Toyi-toyi, sing, do whatever you want, but don't throw stones," he said.

Guess who these protesters will vote for in the next election

well done to him! Brave man and appears to be genuinely concerned for people's well being. We need more cops like this.

They are getting what they voted for and time and time again will vote for the ANC.
Why don't they go burn and destroy anc officials house's and office's?

They should let these animals protest and destroy their own roads and buildings. All they want is free stuff, that the upper and middle class will have to pay for. :(

Good to see this from this cop and I agree, we need more cops like him...

Now had he walked to the stone throwing crowd, the outcome might not have been so peaceful ;)

Um, so you would rather he went to the stone throwers and then gotten killed or worse. And then all hell would have broken out. Some times I don't understand Mybb posters. The man managed to do what few people can, especially cops, calm a violent rampaging crowd. Give him his dues. If more cops where like this man they would have a better reputation wouldn't they? The man did something that the cops never do usually, he resolved the situation and that makes him a better cop then most.

Whoah there. Who said I didn't give him his dues? I said he chose the crowd to approach carefully, otherwise he would have been badly beaten or probably dead. Now what this guy did was good, but he hardly calmed a rampaging horde. He approached a group who asked not to be shot. And cops have a bad reputation because of a few rotten apples, but strangely it takes more than a few good cops to turn the situation around.

Did you read thew post. He approached the crowd that was asking not to get shot and then "He invited them to call the other protesters to where they were standing. Why would you think that I didn't read the post, when I even quoted from it? I'm saying he went to the people begging not to be shot and got them to get some of the other more violent protesters. Clever of him to not try it himself. Anyway, what he did was good. So on that point at least we agree.
