Cop dies in shootout
A POLICE officer was shot dead yesterday after a robbery at a shopping centre in Lambton on the East Rand, Gauteng police said.

Two officers entered the centre in response to a robbery at a jewellery store around 10am, Lieutenant-Colonel Tshisikhawe Ndou said.

"Eight men ran out of the store and confronted the approaching officers. They robbed the officers of two pistols and an R5 rifle before shooting one of them." The 39-year-old sergeant, whose name was not released, died on the scene. The second officer was not wounded.

They fled with jewellery in two cars. The robbers are still at large.

Urgh... I feel sorry for the cops family... Can you imagine how they are feeling now?
Let's hope these bastards are caught and never ever see daylight again!

This is sick, the death of a SAPS member as well as the fact that more fire arms get into the hands of criminals??

When is the ANC going to learn, bring back the death penalty, get proper crime fighting measures in place and spend the money you are stealing where it is needed most.

In most other countries being a Police person means you are earning a salary which is almost or middle class and that brings respect and attracts a better inflow of the correct type of members whom want to make a career of it and progress up the ranks.

Instead you have lower class members which are easily corruptable, are not motivated and are at risk to themselves as well as the public.

Get the right tools in place with the right people and we would all be in a better place.

Ai what is happening to this country. Everyday you hear of sick people doing sick stuff!!! I hope they will be caught and dealth with... Savages!!

This is sad but how would fleeing robbers caught unaware manage to over power a policeman with a R5 who is expecting trouble? Was he not prepared? When ever I responded to something of this nature my safety was off and R5 at a 45 degree angle downwards.
Maybe he made a judgement because of the public around but that judgment cost him or his partners life.

Trust the sowetan to get the story wrong

Gang kills cop during robbery at mall
police sergeant was killed outside a mall after six robbers opened fire on him during a robbery at a jewellery store in Germiston.

SAPS spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Tshisikhawe Ndou said the 39-year-old sergeant, from the Germiston police station, and a constable were responding to a call of a business robbery at Lambton Court when the shooting happened.

They were on a routine patrol at the time.

“The six armed men opened fire as they came out the store. The shot policeman didn’t get an opportunity to draw his gun,” said Ndou.

His partner was able to take cover, said Ndou, and was unharmed in the incident.

The men fled in two Toyota Corollas, one white and the other black.

The police would not say what was stolen in the robbery.

Ndou said the criminals might have targeted the jewellery store in the small centre because of a crime initiative that was launched by the police recently. This initiative, he explained, involved focusing police resources on 15 unnamed large malls in the province.

“The pattern is that they might be targeting smaller malls,” Ndou said.

Late on Tuesday morning, a police helicopter circled the scene as crime scene technicians gathered evidence.

The shot policeman’s body, covered by a blanket, lay next to his patrol vehicle.

Three traffic cones, marking where spent cartridges had landed, lay near his body.

The man’s cap lay beside him under the wheel of his van. He was the driver.

The dead man’s partner was given trauma counselling.

Provincial Police Commissioner Mzwandile Petros was at the scene but refused to speak to the press.

By Tuesday night the police had not made any arrests. - The Star
