Was wondering, if one would like to vote for an opposition party simply to take votes away from the ANC to prevent them from being able to meddle with the constitution, would it be a better idea to vote for the opposition party that is likely to get the most votes, or for the party that one happens to agree with the most on matters of policy?

I reckon Cope might take more votes than the DA next year and become the official opposition, so would it not be a good idea to help make them as strong as possible?

This is despite the fact that I reckon the DA is the most adept political party in terms of actually being able to run things.

Vote for the party whose policies you agree with - that's the whole point. If you are not going to vote ANC, then as long as you vote, it will make a difference. In the current political climate, a coalition is a certainty - not just a possibility. In that case you'd want the party you support at the head of that coalition - and that would be decided by which party has the most votes/clout within the coalition.

Dunno what either COPE or the DA stands for except for their rabid opposition to the ANC. My vote is not guaranteed, let them get up on a soap box and tell the world where they want to take SA in(at least) the next five years.

Does not matter who you vote for, after each election they always form coalition's to run your city/town. The more people who vote for their own party, the better the chance of their party/agenda being top dog in council.

My plan to vote:

On the municipal level.. vote DA. The DA are pretty strong in our municipality.
On the provincial level.. vote COPE. The DA are weak on the provincial level in the Eastern Cape.
On the national level.. vote DA. I dont think the other two parties want whats best for me so on the national level I want to get them as many MP positions as possible.

The DA`s agenda is all over their website and they have more than one website so perhaps now would be a good time to informing yourself of the choices?

www.da.org.za - check out their policies etc. there.
COPE doesn't have a website yet, as they only officially launch 16 December. Look out for something then.

The DA relaunched this last weekend. Helen Zille was on a soap box - where were you? :p

I really doubt that COPE will get more votes than the DA, or much more than the other lesser known parties. COPE will need to cope for lack of votes next year. Having said that, i HOPE that all the opposition parties make some good gain on the ANC.

Best is to vote anyone other than Zulema's party.

Telling you now.. COPE is going to take the Eastern Cape from the ANC. Im pretty confident of that.

I just dont get it, do none of you remember the fact that the COPE guys are the ones who put us in the situation we are in? They were the decision makers / law makers that put SA in the mess we are in and still people want to vote for them? I would rather vote for the "new" ANC.
policy that screwed up this country in terms of laws for and not against the criminal, BEE, AA etc are all policies that COPE members allowed to be made into law.
Yet people will still waste a vote on them???
Well if they win then we really do deserve what we get.

Almost all politicians are corrupt. I would vote for COPE so there is balance in the dark side of the force.

Get them going at each other throats and all the naughty stories will start coming out.

Im not voting for COPE because I agree with them, Im voting for them to strengthen our democracy.

Well said. I've heard some colleagues say stoopid things like "I'll vote for them - give them a chance" - thereby taking their hard-fought vote away from the opposition! I agree that they are good for democracy, in that they will divide the ANC voter base, but that's where it ends for me. I've watched the DA thrive in Cape Town - and Cape Town thrive under the DA-led coalition - and I'm ready to have them move into Gauteng, and possibly Government. I don't agree with all their policies (I'm pro-life, pro-death penalty too), but they are in my humble opinion the better choice at this juncture.

2000 posts. [APPLAUSE/] :)

FYI.. everyone is pro-life.. and everyone is pro-choice.. but thats a debate for another thread.
