Cope vs DA

Correct me if I'm wrong but nothing earth-shattering came off the relaunch, it feels like the DA is still the same-ol-same-ol.

Did you listen to/read the speech? I think it may take a little time, but the winds of change are blowing in DA-land. What it means for us remains to be seen, but their policies are proven at any rate, and didn't need change.

Just heard on the news COPE is willing to align with DA. This is good news and I do hope that this happens. Hopefully then the DA wont be seen as a whites only party.

The Congress of the People says that it would consider an alliance with the Democratic Alliance if it would benefit the people of the country.

COPE Chairperson Mosioua Lekota attended a meeting in Stellenbosch yesterday and people broke into song as he entered the hall, and addressed hundreds of local residents about the new political party as well as their policies.

During a question and answer session he said that their party will not exclude a possible alliance with another opposition party, and that he is willing to join an alliance with the DA to protect the country’s constitution.

IMO the smartest move in this election is to vote for COPE. Whether or not you agree with them and their policies its the smartest thing to do on a strategic level. IF you aren't already planning on voting for teh ANC.

I have always said that what SA needs is for the ANC to split, and its finally happened. What the ANC needs to learn is that its not invincible and that its not entitled to everyone's vote. The "entitlement" the ANC feels in respect of votes is teh smae "entitlement" that has caused all the corruption. At the end of the day the COPE still consists of the same people. They wont do a better job than the ANC, not by a LOOOOOONG shot, but like I said, stategically, its the best thing to do.. IMO!!

It is beyond me how anyone can still vote for COPE or the ANC, one in the same, both screwed this country up almost beyond repair.

But you know what? You vote for them, you must live with them.
Just dont come crying...

If you don't like the power that the ANC has surely you should vote for the only party that has the possibility of reducing the 2/3 majority - which would be COPE.

In the fantasy world of every other party besides the ANC and COPE forming an alliance they still won't come anywhere near being in the majority.

No ?

Out of principle I will not vote for the people who blatantly implemented racist policies on either side of the spectrum.
I will vote for a party that I blv will actually work.
It is more a moral issue for me and not so much a political one. I cannot and will not vote for someone how clearly does not want me here in the first place, the ANC and COPE are those very people.
Maybe if people actually stood up for whats right, we would not be in this situation.

Yesterday, I heard on the radio that Cape Town is the city with the most squatter camps in the country. What I also know is that the mayor of Cape Town (Helen Zille), when she came to power, the first thing she did was pull in the contractors that were suppose to build the rdp houses. To me that is a step in the right direction. What I do not understand, is why did the new ANC regional premier not do the same for the people of the region? Why are they looking the other way again?

Seems to me that we should give Helen a chance. What do we have to lose?

Just up -

Floor-crossing scrapped
19/11/2008 17:33 - (SA)

Cape Town - The National Council of Provinces brought an end to floor-crossing on Wednesday, six years after controversial measures allowing politicians to swap allegiance without losing their seats first came into law.

The House unanimously passed three bills - the Constitution 14th and 15th amendment bills, and the General Laws Amendment Bill - that scrap floor-crossing at all levels of government.

I am going to vote for the DA. I like them they have the better policies etc.

Basically COPE-is just like our old governemnt-useless
or we can have the ANC with Zuma-a criminal.

:p thats my opinion:D

I wouldn't just assume that... You may have to vote DA to vote Cope...

Zille only seems interested in the Western Cape. I know she's the mayor there but she seems far removed from the rest of the country and their needs.

Agreed. I may not agree with the policies of COPE but I will vote for them to reduce the majority. The DA still is perceived to be a white party and therefore won't attract the middle class black vote like COPE is doing. COPE is going to be the next opposition imo.

With all the ex-DA voters planning to vote for COPe, that might well be the case - but that way they will never be more than just the opposition. The ideal situation would (should?) be for DA votes to stay DA, and for (some) ANC to become COPe votes. Then, and only then will we see change.

Yes, we can. ;)

I have thought about this a lot myself since watching politics, but I know this: I will vote for DA in all 3 categories come elections. I really like what COPE is doing to the ANC, but to me they have no track record by which they can back up their claims. I've listened often enough to Mayor Zille on the way home when she is on the radio in Cape Town, and she is a woman who takes no nonsense and gets work done.

Tony Leon did a great job for the DA, but he started running out of energy and ideas by the time he handed over the reigns. This relaunch the DA just had shows that they are only just starting.

Also, I think the fact that COPE exists will make many people realise that they don't actually HAVE to vote ANC. There are other parties out there, and that their voice can be heard as voters. The US election taught people that, even though the system is different. The youth have registered in droves to make their voices heard, and I don't think it will be for the ANC that they will be shouting.

I'm young myself, and I know that my friends and I are so sick of the way the ANC clings to the past, screwed up the government, and is always throwing racism about. We are going to vote, and try to make a change.

WHAT IF this COPE thing gets more votes and replaces DA as an official opposition and from then on COPE does not "oppose" the ANC. I guess some of the ppl here (if not all of us) are screwed. :p

As I said, if you are stupid enough to vote for COPE then dont be upset if they either come in or take over as the official opposition. It will be back to square one for us.

You actually believe that the DA has achieved anything as the "official opposition"?

As opposed to the ANC who has led this country down the path of destruction and corruption for the last 14 years? Sorry man but at least when I put my head down every night, I know I am not voting for a bunch of racists that screwed everything up in SA.
I would rather vote for the ID, DA, or FF than vote for this bunch or the ANC bunch.

I think COPE will beat the DA as the official opposition, but I also think that after the elections, COPE and the DA might be working closer together. COPE also has Simon from the ID now...

Marine1? Bunch of racists that screwed up the country? Dunno if you know.. but the Apartheid guys are gone now.. mostly :D
