Anyone else noticed those cameras set up randomly on the N1 for the last week or so? No cops in sight. They look like little telescopes and are usually in the area from the Lower Church street interchange and the M5 interchange, under the bridges in the middle island.

They're very hard to spot and it's difficult to stick to 80km/hr on that portion of the N1, which has 3 lanes, sometimes 4.

You didn't expect to find them in places where it's difficult to exceed the speed limit, right?

Also noticed that camera, surprised no one stole it yet

Are they large?

I know the cops use HD video camera's to monitor traffic as well, but they are always manned.

The Average speed camera's such as those on the M5 are usually very tiny. Look like ordinary CCTV camera's.

It's a stupid speed limit, no doubt.

If those are speed cameras they don't sound legal. They've long had a standard visible, fixed one in each direction along that section.

I think it is legal. I saw it quite easily while driving 80. If you are in the fast lane going faster you might get a fright, but when it was behind pillar it was facing towards oncoming traffic.

All portal speed cameras must be manned by an officer. That's the law. My girlfriends Dad is the GM for TMT up here in JHB who make and repair, test all these cameras. I've asked him before and he says portables have to me manned.

I suspect that is a counting camera and not actually a speed camera.

It was much too small to be a radar or laser device.
